Help: connecting Abit KT7's extra USB header

Hello,

I wanted to enable the other 2 USB ports on my Abit KT7 (apart from the 2 that are on the back of the motherboard). I looked at the KT7 manual, and it mentions that there are 10 pins next to the battery that are for the USB connectivity.

However, when I look at my motherboard, I see only 9 pins! Meaning, the 10th 'location' is there, but I don't see a pin. Is this normal? Or did the 10th pin break somehow?

I have a case that has 2 USB ports in the front of it, so I wanted to connect that to the extra USB header pins on my motherboard. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I remember spending quite some time trying to figure this out. I don't remember the details but I did take some digital pics after I hooked up my Antec EasyUSB. You don't use the empty pin hole or the adjacent pin that is next to the empty pin hole, both the USB connectors will overhang the 10 pin array on the mb on the side opposite the green capacitor. The pin adjacent to the empty hole gets the red power wire then moving away from the green capacitor is the white wire then the green, then the 2 black grounds.

x=pin o=hole

Empty pin array

xxxxo
xxxxx

Pin array with USB connectors

BBGWRo
BBGWRx

Hope this helps.

The USB header should have a solid blocked area on the tenth pin.
9 pins are all that are needed, just follow the color code int the manual for pin arrangement.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Okay, those pictures and descriptions really help. Okay, you are connecting the extra USB header to some device which gets screwed into the back of the PC, like a PCI card, right? did that 'device' come with the motherboard? I somehow don't remember at all...

Because what I was talking about is that my Case, it has two USB ports in the front of it, and the connectors to those are like 8 connectors, labelled like: +5, -5, D-, D+, GND, GND, etc etc... and they are not color coded either.

So, what do I do? I mean, I'll gladly use the device shown in the pictures if it comes with the KT7 motherboard! But if not, then can someone tell me how to connect the USB header to the ports that are built into the case?

Thanks again.

Yep, unless you bought the motherboard OEM or something, it should come with the extra USB header. It's a snap, literally, to set up. You just slide it in a PCI expansion bay in the back like any other PCI slot, yet it doesn't plug into a PCI slot. Then just connect it up exactly how it looks in the picture I uploaded.. and that's it :)

In my diagram (I am fairly certain):

R=Power, +5V
W=D-
G=D+
B=GND

If you look in the KT7 manual each pin is labeled. It's all a matter of lining the D- connector to the D- pin on the mb, D+ to D+, etc... On my Antec USB I had to move the wires into the proper order after I checked what the pin sequence in the KT7 manual. The manual should be on the Abit web site if you don't have yours. I will check when I have more time at home this evening.

I do have my manual, and I took a look at it a few nights ago, but from what I remember I was confused because the labels on the USB connector of the Case didn't exactly match the labels which are listed in the motherboard manual. Some of them did I remember, but some of them I was confused so I was afraid that if I tried connecting and failed, it would fry my motherboard (would it?)

But yeah I am pretty sure that my mobo is a retail version so I will check for the included USB connector. But the thing is that I think all my slots in the back of my case are filled up (I have an ISA modem, SB Live, Wireless LAN card, 10/100 LAN card, SCSI Adapter, Graphics card), but i -think- one is still free, I'll take a look.

But all the info you guys have given me so far should do the trick, and I thank you all for that :)
