Help! Confused about DVD compatibility on my DRU-510A

Hi all. I have a Sony DRU-510A dvd burner that is rated at DVD-R 4x, DVD-RW 2x, DVD+R 4x and DVD+RW 2x. I recently bought a 50 pack spindle of Memorex DVD+R media and several days later I noticed it is rated at 8X and the top label has a warning that some manufacturers may require a firmware upgrade before using the discs. Sony is listed and when I go to sony's website for info on my drive it doesnt say if these will work but it also doesnt say that it wont. The only sure thing sony say is that DVD-RW 4x wont work! Does anyone out there have the Sony DRU-510A and use DVD+R 8x media successfully? Please let me know asap as I need to encode some stuff and I need to know so I can return these if they wont work and get compatible discs! Thanks. 🙂
 
I don't think Memorex actually makes their own optical media, it is usually one of the major Taiwenese maker's stuff (CMC, Ritek, etc.) repackaged. Use one of the DVD media id utilities to see what you actually have. IAC, you want to update your firmware to the latest as the main thing firmware updates do is improve compatibility with various brands of media. But the band on my 8x +R blanks says that it is for use on 8x and higher burners only. "Use on lower speed burners may result in product failure and damage to the hardware and media." Don't know if that is really the case or not.
. Based on that, I'd recommend you take it back and get 4x media - though I did just burn one at 4x on my 12x burner and it seems to work OK. But since my drive is 12x, that's not really applicable to your situation.

I have an external Lite-on sohw-812S thats rated for 8x media, but id rather use my sony (call me vain but it looks better in my case). I'll try one on my sony and if it doesnt work i'll use em for my Lite-on. Its such a pain in the anus to have to search for compatible media these days.

Stupid Lite-on doesnt like anything Memorex! POS!
 
Well, my Sony DRU-510A plays nice with the memorex 8x DVD+R media even tho its only rated for 4x. Funny thing is my Lite-On doesnt play nice with them at its rated to burn at 8X! Go figure.
