If you're worried about better performance per watt of electricity (an aspect which mfenn seems to be not so interested in), nVidia cards shouldn't be left out of consideration. Especially the latest Maxwell GPU cards, which pretty much leave AMD cards in the dust, efficiency-wise.

The GTX 760 doesn't use significantly less power than the R9 280. You're correct that I don't make recommendations for speculative future parts with no announced release date. Also note that I recommended the Maxwell GTX 980 instead of the GTX 780 Ti when the OP was looking for a more powerful card.
