I just got a Netopia R3100-I ISDN router from a buddy who doesnt use it anymore, and I was gonna try to set it up to allow VPN access to my home network. But when I telnet into the router, I can find the VPN settings. The product manual here. states that it supports VPN standard. It's also stated in the R-series data sheet here.

Any help?

1) Telnet into the router

2) choose WAN Configuration

3) Add Connection Profile

4) Change the encapsulation type to PPTP or IPSec

If you need help from this point go to www.netopia.com and their support tells you how to do this.

Ok, I've got it kind of setup, but whenever I try to connect from somewhere else, it connects, but the disconnects with no error message after less than a second. Any idea what's going on?

If you are trying to connect via PPTP from Win2000/XP:

In the connection profile on the PC under the Security tab click the dot by "Advanced (custom settings)" and click the "Settings" button. Change the pulldown to "Optional Encryption and then make sure only MS-Chap and MS-Chap2 are selected.

On the router profile settings:

Profile Enabled: Yes
Encapsulation Type:"PPTP"
In Encapsulation Options:
PPTP Partner IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Authentication: MS-Chap
leave the Send Hostname/password blank
Set a Receive Hostname/password
Initiate Connections: No

In IP Profile connections
NAT Translation Enabled: No
Remote IP Helper: Choose a free IP address on your subnet
Remote IP Mask: 255.255.255.255 <--- all 255's (very important)
no filter set

Also on the main WAN configuration page go into ATMP/PPTP Default Profile and make sure "Answer ATMP/PPTP Connections" says Yes with Receive Authentication set to MS-CHAP.

All this is with the 4.11.3 firmware. If you have a different one then things might be in different places.
Also disable the firewall if is enabled to get this working. After you get the tunnel going then you need to open holes in the firewall for PPTP to go through before reenabling it.

I don't work with Netopia much these days but I was looking at one of my customers that I have successfully setup PPTP connections with.
