HELP Computers mouse and keyboard stopped working!

Ok the keyboard and mouse of my friends computer stopped working, I would just do a reinstall or windows, but there are way too many important files on it becase the computer is for a business, does anyone know how i can fix this problem without loosing all of the files?

1. Ok first step is to try a different mouse and keyboard set.
Reboot
2. If step 1 doesn't work try a usb mouse and keyboard set.
Reboot
3. Post these results first.

can you use USB keyboard/mouse? See if windows will install them automatically. Then see if can use that to copy files.

Also, just make sure he didn't accidentally plug the keyboard into the mouse port and vice versa. Keyboard = purple-colored port, mouse = green-colored port.
