So i get into work today, and the computer keeps going to Chkdsk saying the volume is dirty
when it finishes it says 0 bad sectors and reloads...going back to chkdsk

tried going into safemode but that just seems to stall

this has a couple weeks worth of my work on it...need ideas ASAP!

edit: ok does anyone know a way to create a boot disk for windows XP?

normally loading it the XP welcome screen comes on and then it goes to chkdsk

when trying to do Repair from the disk it claims it doesnt see any hard disks on the computer wtf?!?!?, it obviously does if it tries to load it sometimes

think this is becuase it is only looking on the IDE channels

what hdd make is it?
download a hdd diagnostic from the manufacturer.

I think seagate do a diagnostic tool that will work on any make hdd.

can try Super Utility CD 2003/2004/2005 if you or know anyone has one. Or, try booting off from the XP Cd to the recovery console. Possible defective hard drive, I'm suspecting.

NTFS or FAT32?

Tried booting to recovery console--no luck. Dell thinks it's a corrupt hard drive, but they feel that the corruption probably lies in boot files, so the data I have on there should be recoverable. Guess we'll find out.

NTFS--two 160GB Maxtor SATA hd's in RAID1 mirror array.

If you just want access to the volumes, use Bart's PE boot disk to boot up the box and copy off whatever you need to a USB device. If you want to see what the issue is, remove one of the volumes (try removing each in turn) and see which persistently cannot fix itself. If you have a problem with one and not the other, boot with the good one and establish another clean mirror.

If you can't use an XP CD to boot to recovery console, then either the hardware itself is bad (not the files on it) or the files the RC tries to load (like the registry) are bad.

Have you tried RC with each hard drive in there, in turn, to see what happens?
Can you detail *exactly* what happens when you try booting into the RC?

the reason the XP CD is unable to see the drives is because the drives are connected via a board and the drivers for that board are not loaded

During the bootup phase you need to hit F6 to specify the loading of additional drivers, and then supply those drivers on a floppy disk.
