HELP! Computer just shuts off on its own

Nocturnal

Lifer
I have the following:

Asus A7N266-e nForce 1 motherboard/chipset
1 GIG of Crucial PC2100 DDR SDRAM
1.4 GHZ 266 T-Bird Athlon
IBM 60GXP 60 GIG HDD
Radeon 9800XT
nForce sound
onboard nic

For the past few nights now I've had the computer just shut off on its own. It turns itself off completely. It doesn't bluescreen before it turns off either.

I'm wondering if it's the motherboard or processor that might be causing this? Normally if it bluescreens I'd think it's my ram however it isn't. It just shuts off completely without any type of warning. It doesn't reboot either, it'll just shut down. I'll have to power it back on and it will go into bios saying that bios was messed with.

One more thing I'd like to add. For the past few weeks I've had to run my processor at 1050mhz instead of the 1400 via the bios setting of 100/33.

I just tried switching the fsb back to 133/33 and when it got to the Windows screen where it shows the status bar, it would go for a while then reboot itself.

I alleviated the problem of it rebooting at the welcome screen by taking out two sticks of 256mb of ram. I have one stick of 512 in there right now and it booted into Windows fine. Can I diagnosed/pin point the problem to my memory?

Second update, that did not alleviate the problem. Once back up to 1.4 133/33 in the bios it started doing what it was doing before I dropped it down to 100/33, freezing up completely.

--- Now what exactly could this mean? A friend said CPU. I want to know before hand, before I go and take out some emergency cash to purchase whatever part that needs to be replaced.

Here are some of the temps I got through the bios:

VCORE 1.8V
+3.3V 3.3
+5V 4.4
+12 11.9

CPU temp: 51.5 degrees celcius
MB temp: 34 degrees celcius

Sounds to me like it's either your power or your motherboard. I would (1) try another PSU or (2) try updating the BIOS.

I just got this power supply with my Antec case a few months ago. It's the 480W PSU. Shouldn't it be ok? It's been ok thus far 🙁

Would be good to know if you recently added/changed hardware in the last week?

Why would you need to run at 100fsb for the last weeks?

Could be your cpu is getting hot and triggerring the bios auto shutdown. Check your bios autoshutdown thing to see its not set low. Warmer weather might be raising your case temps just enough. 9800XT sure can warm up a case.

To overcome some cpu heat issues, might add a slot fan next to your 9800XT and get a very good cpu HSF.

I would think 480w Antec is fine for your system.

ram eh? i have the same problem and have been through 2different sets of ram. when i overclock it reboots just as randomly, without blue screens as it does at stock.

So, do you think it would be CPU or mobo? i know PSU isnt the case, Antec480w.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread! 😛

take a
