I am able to install windows and such but as soon as it gets past the windows logo screen with the progress bar, it shows a blank screen. I press the power off button and it turns off as it would be shutting down windows but i still dont see anything. Is it motherboard/ram? i dont know how it would just start doing this. Never really experienced failure until now.

can you get into safe mode? If you can, go into msconfig and select the SOS startup, and if it is a driver failure then it will hang when loading that particular driver.

To get into Safe mode, hit F8 repeateldy before the Windows Logo screen. I think you have a problem with one of the automatic startup items. So, when in safe mode, to go start>run>type msconfig and click on the startup tab. Uncheck everything from that list and restart normally. If it works you know that windows is having a problem with one of those programs. Then just go down the list and check each one and restart. Do that until you reach a point where the problem happens agian. Once you find the culpret research the shit out of it online.

How much time is it setting on that blank screen before you power it off or reset it? is there any Hard drive activity; is the HD LED flickering? I ask because it's normal for a few seconds to pass with the screen blank at that point, and on the off chance that you are only giving it a couple seconds rather than waiting.

Do you have more than 1 HDD?

If you do, then boot into bios and make sure you set it so the correct HDD (the HDD that has the logical drive where your OS is, probably your C: drive) is set as the first boot device.

That's usually when the display is set to a resolution the monitor cannot handle. At the XP startup menu, select vga mode, then adjust settings if xp loads then.

CUBBY THANKS SO MUCH...
I pressed F8 and then chose the VGA mode and it worked... the resolution was really low but it works... I tried changing the display settings and then it went black again...

do you think its because my video card is shot?
I think i may have now overloaded it because it actually happened a few weeks later after i attached a 30 inch monitor to it...

if you think i only need a new vid card then recommend me one?

Try reinstalling the video card drivers before you go all the way thorugh with buying a new card.
