HELP: Computer freezing and turning itself on

Never had problems before for over 3 years.

A few days ago my computer started freezing, the HD activity light just goes solid and I am unable to do anything else. I went into safe mode and ran adaware, it seemed to fix it, but now obviously it did not. I think it might be a service that is getting stuck but I dont know how to tell. It is usually not long after it boots up that it freezes.

With this I have been having to hold down the power button to turn the computer off. However, I just turned it off several minutes ago, left the room, and heard a startup beep and came in and found it turned on. I have been wondering why over the past few days it had been turned on when I had turned it off.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: The computer has been running all day with no problems at home. So I dont think it is hardware else it would have crashed by now.

UPDATE:

Think I found a problem. I looked and the Seagate HD I put in a few weeks ago to backup my system was not showing up in XP, in explorer or disk management. So I changed the power plug on it to a direct one to the PSU and it came up, but is showing:

" N:\ is not accessible. Disk structure is corrupted and unreadable."

This HD has been really the only change in 3 years. Should I try to format it or what from here? It is a brand new HD.

Maybe you need a need a new Mobo?

It even did it when I was sitting in my chair.

thats... interesting. i assume that you don't have power on by keyboard or mouse right? Anyway, to the first prob, what were u doing when it froze? Anything that accses the HD? (that was a rehtorical question. don't answer it.) I suggest reseting ur bios and getting the latest version b4 u do anything. also, try and backup up ur data. b4 we can help anymore, give more info. what were u doing? btw, which rig are we talking about? i notice u have 5. reply with more info, and i'll see what i can do.

Im either surfing the net in Firefox, reading my email in Outlook or Hotmail,or just moving my mouse around the screen. It froze once when I had my mouse over the Outlook icon in quick launch.

These items are the first things I do when turn on my computer. So I am guessing that it is some service that gets stuck but I dont have a guess to which one it might be.

I have tried leaving task manager open to see what program is using the most memory when it freezes but it usually doesnt happen until I close it. 🙁.

I have a mirroring raid and I just added a third hard drive in the past two weeks to back up my system.

When your computer is freezing, it could be a number of things that can cause that, bad ram, bad hd, bad mobo, virus, trojan, and bad psu. However, when you say that your computer boots up by itself, we can narrow down your problem to 2 things, bad mobo, or bad psu because those are the only things that can start up a computer along with the freezing problems that you have. I tend to lean towards the mobo because its rare that a psu can short itself to boot up your computer.

Look for leaky, bulging, and/or rusty caps on the mobo. Best thing to do is replace mobo.

Horse apples, I will look tonight, but the comp is over 3 years old. 🙁

I might take out the latest hard drive I put in a few weeks ago. That has been the only change since I built it.

PSU is an Antec 430w.
Mobo is an Gigabyte GA-7VAXP

If it turns on by itself then it can't be just software issue. Unless there are software out there that can turn on your pc that I don't know about.

Try chkdsk /f and see if that works.

I took the HD out and am taking it back for a replacement.

The power to the HD was split off from a fan. Could that have caused the problem?

My guess is that your power supply is flaking out. I had similar random issues a few months back, and after replacing my power supply they all went away.
