This problem has been going on for a while. I installed a wireless network to share my cable modem connection between my desktop and my laptop. At totally random times, my desktop will drop its network connection. This happens 2-3 times per hour and is absolutely infuriating. I have to disconnect the router from power and reconnect it. The the connection works again for 1/2 hour or so. I used to think it was the router, and I bought a new one. Same problem happens. The funny thing is: when the desktop craps out the connection, the laptop can still surf the net, but cannot access the desktop shared files.

Now the problem even occurs when I remove the router from the loop. If I connect the desktop directly to the cable modem, same problem. How can figure out if it's the network card, cable modem, or a WindowsXP software issue? Or is it something else? Please help. My hardware is listed below. Thanks in advance.

Pentium III 800EB
ASUS CUSL2 Motherboard
300 Watt Powersupply
512 MB RAM
COM 21 Cable modem (provided by Comcast)
Netgear FM-114P Wireless Router (formerly, the problem occurred with the D-Link DI-614+)
Kingston NIC installed in the last PCI slot (don't remember the model numberl; card purchased circa 1996-1998?)

Thanks for your help.
