I have a major problem that will require a full format and reinstall if I can't fix it. I've been able to fix it somewhat in the past but I want to know the cause of it. OK, this just happened after I d/led a very large compressed file. It was the new F.E.A.R multiplayer part of the game that was just released and it's 1.77GB. It d/led quickly but when I went to install it, it took about 20 to 25 minutes just for the installer to come up! Then once it finally came up, it went faster but it still probably took another 15 minutes to install. This has happened a couple times before when I've d/led very large files like this and even when I reboot the computer or defrag it, it becomes very slow. It only happens to some programs and others it's fine with. When I say slow, I'm talking around 20 to 30 minutes to open say Office XP and I'm not exaggerating in the least!
Like I said before, I've been able to repair this somewhat using CHKDSK with the /R switch.....this is restore much of the performance back but not all. Another thing is that once a program finally does load, it runs just fine. Just to let everyone know, I don't have any virus' or spyware at all and I'm certain of that. I'm very careful of where I go and I use Panda Antivirus and have ZoneAlarm Pro with a Linksys wireless router/firewall. I only use it as a firewall as I have no other computer connected to it so it's not even broadcasting and in fact it can't because I have that part disabled.
To put things in perspective, here are my system specs. A64 X2 4400+, 2GB Corsair PC3200 RAM, Seagate 250GB SATA HD and a 80GB WD HD, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum and finally a GeForce 7800 GTX 512. I'm also using WinXP Pro/SP2 and I keep everything updated to the latest non-beta drivers. For some reason it seems large files seem to corrupt the file system and I have no idea why. Is it because they're large compressed files? That doesn't make any sense...being compressed shouldn't have any bearing on it.
What happens when I want to open certain programs up, it acts as if the computer doesn't have hardly any RAM at all and obviously that's not the case. I don't have many TSR's and my Systray is pretty sparse. This recent file really slowed everything down. I went to open My Computer and maybe try to use disk cleanup, thinking perhaps that might help, but I couldn't even get that open. I clicked on it and the HD light came on and just stayed on. The computer doesn't lock up per se' but as non-responsive as it is, you'd think I only had 32 megs of ram or something and/or was defragging, running a virus scan and running a game all at the same time. I realize WinXP wouldn't even run with 32 or even 64MB of ram....I'm just saying.
So I'm really in need of some help because I'm really stumped. I had this happen with a completely different computer but it too happened after I d/led a large file. Again, I'm certain the file isn't infected with a virus or my computer is infected. This only happens after I go to install the file. It's like it takes up all the RAM even after you reboot your computer. I just ran CHKDSK /R and it's still slow; although it's better, but it's still much slower than it should be. I'll probably have to run it again but that's no guarantee it will fix this problem. Any ideas to fix this problem will be greatly appreciated. BTW, I just tried to open up my computer and run Disk Cleanup again, but this time, I got an error that said Windows Explorer encountered a problem and needs to close. This is the first time that's happened here. That's Windows Explorer, not IE. Please help...thanx!
