Yesterday I bought the JVC KD-SX980. I played some regular burned audio CD's and everything worked fine. Sounded great.

Then today I burned some MP3 CD's to listen to. EVERY song skips at least 2-3 times. But the weird thing is that the songs skip in the exact same locations consistently. Keep in mind that this only happens to the Mp3 CD's. The audio CD's still work without any skipping. So at first I thought it was my CD-R's. I tried out 3 different brands (Khypermedia, Lite-On, and Fuji:made in Japan). None of them ever gave me problems in the past, but they all skipped in the head unit (these are new, no scratches at all). That lead me to believe it wasn't the CD-R's. But the consistent location of the skips makes me think it isn't the head unit either.

Oh yea, while I was @ BestBuy buying the Fuji CD-R's, I also tried out my mp3 CD on their display unit and it skipped in the EXACT same locations. So that REALLY confused me.

First of all, is there a separate laser that reads MP3's from the one that reads regular audio CD's???

I bought this unit @ BestBuy along w/ a 4-year replacement plan, BUT i got it installed somewhere else. If I need to, will they uninstall/reinstall a new one for me if neccessary? I don't think I should have to pay for the uninstall/reinstallation if indeed they gave me a bad unit.

I read a ton of reviews before buying this unit, and I heard that it had no major problems whatsoever, including skipping. So whats going on?????!!!

Please help. Thanks.

I have an Aiwa CDC-MP32 player and have never had a problem with it.
This doesn't really help your issue. But, you said come in if you have an mp3 head unit.

Sucks that you didn't get it installed there.

Do your MP3 cds work on your computer? That is, do they skip in those places?

I have that unit and it works flawlessly with my MP3 Cds. In fact I love the damn thing!

I'd get a replacement from BB...

What is the specs of the MP3's you are playing? If they are HBR (>192KBps) or VBR then they may have problems on some players. Thus, you can make sure you have various kinds of MP3's (128Kbps, 192Kbps, 256Kbps, and VBR) and then try playing each of those songs.

You can also try burning the CD at a slower speed (1x or 2x) and/or using different media or lower minute media.

I tried all of these methods with a portable MP3 player that I bought and it still had problems but so did the store units and the same MP3's played fine on my homw PC FROM the CD that I burned and on a DVD MP3 player so it was definitely the manuf.'s fault.

Burn 2 - 3 songs at 1X (YES one speed) and see if that makes a difference.

Also have you tried a different writing program.

Yea, they're all 128-192 Kbps, so I don't think thats the prob.

I'll try the slower burning speed and a different burning program (I'm using Nero 5.5)

Thanks to everyone who replied.
More input would be appreciated

no the mp3's are fine on computer. i wouldn't keep the mp3 if it had 2-3 skips in it =)

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think he meant "Does the CD you recorded play on your computer without skipping?" Since you say you tried your CD in the Best Buy display model and it skipped in the same places, maybe it's your CD.

I agree with dman6666, btw, try and burn another at a slower speed. Good Luck.

I went through 4 Aiwa MP3 decks, and found endless tails of woe for other brands cheap models online

Pay for a high end deck (over $400) or stick with plane jane cd audio

also remember when looking at decks a ~$300 unit cost bestbuy around ~$150 (employee cost, I would bet bottom line it's more like $100) so it prolly cost Aiwa around $30 to produce

(can you tell I hate Aiwa)

I bought the Blaupunkt San Jose last year.
Plays cd/mp3/wma no skips, but of course it picks up the pops of poorly ripped mp3's.
No problems at all with the unit itself. The remote control suXors, BAD. My buttons stick in the down position.
Other than that, I'll keep it.
