I'm working on a friend's Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114 laptop. It was virus infected from here to forever so I wiped the disk, restored the original installation, added protection, and bumped the RAM from 256 MB to 2 GB.

The one problem is, the BIOS is password protected. The owner didn't set it. He is computer illiterate, and he bought it from someone else who probably forgot to clear it before delivery.

I also flashed the BIOS to the latest version from Toshiba, and it rebooted nicely, but that didn't clear the BIOS password.

Toshiba says the only way to clear the password is through an authorized repair shop. I called a local shop, and they want $95 to do it. The guy was nice enough to tell me that it could be reset by shorting out a couple of terminals, just like a desktop.

It's a four year old Cele based machine so as long as it's working, I don't think it's worth that much money just to clear the password. I understand the security issue, but I already checked with Toshiba's support, and the machine is not reported stolen. I just want him to be able to access the BIOS if he needs it.

Anyone know how to clear the BIOS on this machine?

TIA

I would try google for backdoor or default passwords. If there aren't any, you'll have to take the laptop apart.

Thanks. I already did checked Google and other searches. Most people are looking for answers and not getting them. I'm tech enough that I'd settle for a service manual.

Try removing the Cmos battery and the actual laptop battery for around 15 minutes, that should do it.
