help chose between velociraptor 150gb or ssd ocz vertex 30gb

I wouldn't get the velociraptor. Newer 7200rpm drives can just about match the velociraptor in terms of transfer speeds, though they still lose in terms of response times. And since you're thinking about a HDD/SSD with performance in mind, the SSD is just way better.

$136 for a 30GB SSD (OCZ) or $130 for a 40GB SSD (Kingston but really and Intel G2 cut in half)?

That might be another option.

I have a 150Gb Velociraptor and have been considering an SSD. I wouldn't bother with the Velociraptor if you want to make a jump from 7200 rpm. I also have a caviar blue and there's not a BIG difference in it and the velociraptor in some areas. The storage space is a killer though on the velociraptor and the ssd.

I use the 30GB OCZ as my boot drive. You really need to consider its size before deciding. A full Win7 install will take up a ton of space, nearly filling the drive. I ran Win 7 through vLite, disabled hibernation, system restore, and moved virtual memory to my spindle drive and got the install under 6GB. With all my programs installed I'm using 13GB.

That being said, I love my SSD and they really are worth the accolades they receive. At some point I'll pick up a second 30GB and run a RAID-0 with them, and be able to comfortably install a few games and use space for a scratch drive for video and audio projects.

yes, 30GB is too little.
I have an intel 80GB ssd... I think 60GB is minimum I would take for OS drive...
If you can fit it on 30GB though, more power to you.

vote for SSD. You just need to plan out a few things and put as little as possible on it and utilize spindles as much as you can for data that doesn't need fast access.

like HendrixFan said, offload non essential stuff to a spindle. the pagefile for example shouldn't be on a small SSD and if you have the cash for an SSD, you should have some pennies left over for decent size memory. Ignore super warp speed TM memory and use spend on an SSD and other worthwhile things.

be sure to check out OCZ's official forum for tips SSDs
