HELP: Choppy DVD playback w/ HW+ and Pioneer 10x on 533A

I recently built a second machine from parts lying around the house. It is a Celeron 533a with 128MB RAM on a P3B-F. I also put into this machine my Pioneer 10x DVD drive and my Hollywood Plus Decoder card for DVD play to my TV. SInce doing this, I have not been able to get more than 50 minutes into a movie before it gets really choppy. This DVD combo previously resided in a P3 800 machine on a P3V4X with 128MB RAM, and worked fine even while I was on the internet, or playing Diablo 2, or any other low impact task. What has changed? A 533 should be MORE than enuf to run this setup, especially considering that its a hardware decoded system. It is not just one movie either... GISS, Gladiator, and End of Days ALL do it. Only things funky about this computer are its ancient (read 4 year old) 1.6MB HDD, which isnt even ATA 33 I dont think, and its ancient Cirrus PCI video card with 512k of RAM, neither of which should affect the DVD performance as far as I know. The only thing I can think of is that the HDD and the DVD are on the same channel... could the crap HDD cause the DVD to have to run slower? Sounds wrong to me... that coupled with the fact that it takes a while to get bad (and progressively gets worse, like a memory leak) makes me belive it is something else. I have nothing else running when this happens, although that shouldn't matter as it worked just fine on the 800 system when I would do other things. Hell I dunno, that is why I ask you guys 🙂

TIA!!

Three things to check:

1. Is the DVD-ROM and the HDD on the same cable? If this is the case, then you may be having some competition between the two devices.

2. Is DMA set to "On" on your DVD drive? Find the drive in System Properties and look at the Setting tab.

3. Do you have a updated firmware for your Pioneer drive? I was having some read problems with my Pioneer 114 DVD-ROM drive that vanished with the 2.03 firmware. Head over to Pioneer or Firmware Page for the files. Make sure you follow the directions to the letter to avoid permanently damaging your drive.
