Help, Choppy 3D in Windows 2000

First of all, I should say that I only have a P-II 400 with a 16MB TNT1 graphics card. However, in Windows 98, Madden 2001 plays great. When I try to play it in Windows 2000 (I dual-boot), the movement of the players and the camera make me sick. I'm playing at 1024x768 (800x600 didn't look any better), and have my refresh rate set at 85hz. I even installed the nVidia Refresh Fix.

What can I do to play Madden in Windows 2000 as smoothly as it plays in 98? I hate switching over everytime I want to play a few downs. Should I get 3DMark2001 and play with my graphics settings to see what gives me the best FPS?

Thanks, Rob

You might want to try updating your Tnt driver to Detonator3 (or 4) instead of using the Win2k inbuilt driver. Detonator3 driver is available at Nvidia's website.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I had Detonator 4 drivers, and recently installed the 12.41's off of nVidia's website (non-certified for my TNT1). I've been keeping up with the latest drivers for about 2 years now, but just had this problem when I switched to 2000. I know, I need a new card. Just wanted to see if anyone had any tweaking tips before I shell out the cash.

My advice to you would be to upgrade your video card. How about a Radeon LE? or Geforce2 MX? They are both pretty cheap and you'll like Madden a lot more.

Yeah, I may go get a Geforce2 MX tonight. My 3dMark2001 scores were 501 in 1024x768 16bit, and 517 in 800x600 16 bit. That supports my claim that 800x600 didn't look much better in Madden. Guess it's time to upgrade the video card. I'd get a new CPU if I wasn't holding on to the hopes that my company will finally give us employees the free PC's they've been promising.
