well my company is looking to purchase an external dvd dual layer recorder. i was hoping that pioneer or nec had an external version of their 16x dvd recorder, but from my quick search, doesn't look to be the case. i don't know much about external DVD recoders so i'm asking for opinions..what's the best brand and model to go with...does anyone make a 16x external or will one be coming out soon that i should wait for....how's plextor in the dvd world...i know before they were one of the best for cd recorders but i don't hear much about them for dvd recordings....i know sony makes an 8x external but i want other options..thanks

USB 2.0 ime has minor issues filling the buffer at 8x ..probably moreso on 16x and dual layer blanks aren't inexpensive..cannot comment on 1394a/b protocol ..yet..so buy whichever unit you wish and a hi quality enclosure ..gl :)

If you have an immediate need, you may need to buy drives and put them in enclosures. Since 8x media is just starting to appear, it will probably be 4-6 months before you can readily get 12x or 16x media. Firewire is the way to go as it is architected for streaming data. Plexitor is good. I am partial to Pioneer. NEC3500 could be a good option too. Pioneer does has a 4x slim-line external (S202?)
