I have a 2.4GHz p4 northwood with the oem heatsink/fan. Some of the blades of the fan broke off so now when it spins it makes a super loud annoying sound. So i'm thinkg about going to bestbuy or circuit city to replace the fan. Can any general cpu fan fit? and is there a certain size I need to get? thanks.

I'm pretty sure you'll find you won't be able to buy just an original fan for the stock heatsink, nor, I think, the entire heatsink at all. I'd say you're going to have to buy a third party heatsink, and there aren't many that are cheap and good. The zalman aluminium / copper one should do you quite nicely though - decent cooling (better than stock) at not too expensive a price. Should be pretty quiet too.

This is the Zalman cooler that Degrador has mentioned.

It is great. I have it on a 2.6GHz P4.
You need to make sure it will fit in your case and on your motherboard. I have it on ASUS P4P800 deluxe with no problem.

Thanks for the reply. I have an old Epox 4bda2+ (i845) motherboard. Will this fit? Also, will this fan be compatible with an Athlon64 socket939 cpu? I am thinking about building a new computer based around it. I would luv to buy a heatskin/fan combo that not only will work for the socket478 p4's but also the socket939 athlon's.

According to the description on the manufacturer site, it fits on AMD 462, 754, 939 and 940 sockets.

Have a look.
