I'm a newbie building my first pc. I just recieved my Antec SX830 and don't know what additional fans I should purchase to accomodate overclocking a T-bird.

Also, this may be a stupid question but how do I determine what pin size I need? (80mm 3 pin or 80mm 4 pin) Thank for the help.

Antec only take 80mm fans...u can use a few 92mm but, you'll have to remove the fan holder and use some glue. The 3pin is to plug into your mobo fan header, while 4pin is standard moldex connectors for all components powersupply. I only use 4pin kinds, since you dont' want to overload your mobo with extra fans. They can connect into each other, so you really just need one or two power connectors from the powersupply for them.

go here for some very cheap fans. Best Byte Direct

The ones come with in SX830 are Top Motors sleeve-bearing low RPM types. I bought another 3 Top Motors ballbearing medium RPM fans for the case, so 5 overall. They should keep the case very cool, also feel like an airport. ;)

Does the SX830 only come in beige or can you get a black one also? Just curious as you both have one and i'm looking to get one for my new system i'm building in a fwe weeks (its my first time too). I've heard good things and they have good prices, by the way, where did you get yours from and tell me what kind of fans you decide to get, i'm confused on the 3/4 pin thing myself.

I got my case from Onvia.com $85 free shipping 20 days ago. It was the last day they had it priced so low.

SX830 doesn't come with black, only 1030 does. But u'll have to realize the problems created by the extra door on 1030. I just can't live with one.

ARGH!!! NO!! I CAN'T BELIEVE THE MISCONCEPTION!

SX1030 is not bigger than SX830. They have the same exact dimention, even steel chassis. It's only different in the front cover, and the HD cage.

As for the door....it's so inconvenient having to open and close when u want to pop open CDROM, or press the power button. If you dont have a CDRW it's not as bad, but if you do, the door's going to be alot of hassel.

I don't like the door much either but if you have a Black 1030 it's key.

Stika,
I agree, the door makes it much easier to find peripherals since you don't have to necessarily get black ones for a SX1030B. Personally, I think I'll deal with the door.

Poncherelli,
I bought my SX830 from local COMPUSA to save shipping. I paid $99 plus 4.5% tax... For the fans, I'm thinking about buying Silencer Fans.

I am also thinking about getting the silencer fans from PC Power & Cooling. I already bought the heatsink-fan from them for my processor. it will be here on friday. i got my case from Egghead. it was like $94 including shipping. i think $86 without shipping.

I did the PC Power & Cooling Fans in all 4 positions of my SX830. Running a fully loaded 1GHz TBird, 3 SCSI drives, CDRW, DVD, Tape, LS-120, Floppy, GeForce2 MX, 10/100 Enet (running @ 100Mbps), my box registers about 9-10 degrees Farenheit over ambient(Have the probe from a RS external/internal thermo stuck in the middle of that thing). And it's pretty quiet. I think the loudest thing in there is my Alpha PAL6035 w/high output sunon 60mm fan (from www.cooltek.com. My next move on that thing is to go back in and put in a rounded UDMA EIDE cable, self round my 2 SCSI cables, and replace the PAL6035 with a taisol GCK760092.

Those silencer fans are very nice. One caveat tho. They are pictured with a single ended connector, and that's the way they come stock from PC P&C. I mentioned this to them, and they said, that if you ask, they can double gang them (put on passthrough type plugs). Check with them when you order. Otherwise, you will need a bunch of "Y" power splitter cables (If you need all the connectors, then you will need a total of 4 splitters). Or some other nice arrangement to get more power to the fans....

mgpaulus,
I just called up PC Power and Cooling and they told me that the silencers are only available with a single power connector. Did you speak with anyone in particular? I could do the Y-splitters, but I'd really rather not.

Well, I didn't really talk to anyone. I just did it via email. Here is a copy of the transcript:

We can gang them together or we have "Y" connectors. THank You.

Hmmm. After re-reading my note, maybe they don't put the double connectors on. But what exactly do they mean, when they say, "We can gang them together"...???

Running Panaflow L1A's in all of my SX-830 cases (five 80mm fans per case), quiet and very good cooling.

i put in a 120 mm panaflo at the front of my case.. if you remove the purple fan holder on the bottom, a 120 mm panaflo will fit perfectly there.

I use 4 19 cfm@12dBA Pabst 8412 Sintec fans or case ventilation. They keep my TBird1500 at around 47C - 54C full 24/7 Seti load depending on ambient temps. Not to mention this is a very silent way to get high case ventilation!

Panaflo's are easier to get in the US and they are cheaper. Someone mentioned that Pabst fans were really cheap in Germany. Lucky Germany. They get great prices on Pabst fans and steal Mitch from Baywatch to worship as a rock idol. ;)

Any idea where you can get Panaflo's with 3 pin connectors? I'm looking for a place that doesn't have a minimum order and won't rape you on shipping.

TIA,

Sal
