Help Choosing a Scanner

My mother is about to embark ona project of scanning all our photographs. We have several hundred photos of odd shapes and sizes. I'm looking for a reliable scanner that is relatively decent in scan speed, relatively user-friendly and gets the job done!

The cheaper the better of course, but I don't want a super-cheap model that ends up doing nothing!

I agree. The Epson scanners are almost always on the Editor's Choice lists as well as some of the Canon models. OTOH, I have a Visioneer OneTouch 6600 that I got for around $25. after rebate that works more than well enough for my needs and you can often find it or similar in the big box store ads in the Sunday papers. See my review of it in the "User Reviews" section of TechIMO.com :

. You may want to consider buying a copy of the PaperPort software for use with any scanner you choose. I don't think you can get any better - and it is avaiable separately.

Hmm, not sure about that PaperPort stuff... I know someone that uses an old version with an older scanner, and I wasn't too impressed with it when I saw it (but they might have improved it since then). Many advanced hobbyist and professional photographers seem to like software such as Vuescan or Silverfast.

P.S. I don't mean to cut down on PaperPort or anything... just offering some other suggestions that might be of use to a photo enthusiast. 🙂
