Help choosing a new monitor!

Hey guys. Hopefully this is the right section for this, if not sorry 🙂

I just bought a 19" Viewsonic A91f+ CRT from COMPusa, and I am terribly dissapointed with this monitor after using it for a week now giving it a chance. Its excellent for gaming and motion, but everything else sucks. Its not a true flat screen like they claim, and the geometry is terrible, and the monitor suffers from terrible distortion. If I were to go to the desktop, and open a folder, the screen size and geometry changes, and if I were to drag around the folder, the geometry starts moving.

Anyway, this is going back to the store in a few hours. Are there any stores that sell decent CRT monitors? My budget is around 250 dollars, and I came across this monitor from newegg. NEC/MITSU 19"

Is that a good monitor? I have an old 17" Dell (sony) trinitron and I love the picture on that, but its just too small and I need something bigger (also moving that to another pc) and this Viewsonic isnt anywhere near as good as that was. How is that NEC? Newegg ratings look pretty good, but Im not basing my entire purchase decision off that. What is the best monitor I can get for 250 dollars shipped?

Thanks for your help and time! 😀

Yes, it's one of the top 19" CRTs. I have the slightly more expensive version that sells for about $270-$280 on Newegg (sports a slightly higher resolution and refresh rates, I think)... and it rocks. It doesn't have the "fake" flat screen like that Viewsonic did. It's uses Diamondtron tech, which is basically Mitsubishi's version of the Trinitron. Very sharp screen. Download the NaviSet software from NEC's website and it will be perfectly calibrated in a couple of minutes upon plugging it in.

Be careful when cleaning it. Has all sorts of protectants and filters on the glass. Don't use things with ammonia and alcohol, for they will utterly destroy the surface. I've been using Monitor Lizard with a lint-free cloth and it works great.

Awesome!

Thanks for the advice. Just got back from CompUSA. The Viewsonic is gone. Had to pay a little restocking fee, but its not that bad.

Thanks, anyone else got anything to add? How much better will that monitor be than the Dell/Sony Trinitron? Im on it right now, and I absolutely love this thing. Text it so sharp. Im almost thinking about buying one in a 19". Is the NEC better?

The monitor xboxist refers to is worth every cent more than the 991. Mitsubishi 930-sb. It has a true flat screen (diamondtron nf), not a flat plane of glass over a slightly curved tube. Also uses a 1 gun for focus which the dell\sony does not have and its .24dp. I had a 1000 buck sony before and this runs circles around it. imho it is definately the finest 19" you can get today. Text is super sharp and the picture is just absolutely perfect as is the geometry. 991 is .25-.27 variable dp and uses a 3 gun focus like sony. It also is not a truly flat tube (uses the stock diamondtron tube).
Dell is the best place to get it due to their fine no hassle return policy, beware of neweggs return for monitors or other places (most places have a policy they do not advertise on monitors and that is you have to return the monitor to the manufacturer) With Dell you can send it back to Dell no questions asked. The 930 is 287.00 with free shipping and the 991 is 242.00 free shipping. I got the 930 from dell. I can tell you you will be glad you spent 40 more bucks and got the 930 but your call. Dell just ended their special 10% off all monitors a few days ago but if you want to wait a week or 2 they will offer it again however the monitor base price may be slightly higher than now. Just depends, it may be a lower base price with 10% off in a couple of weeks. No way to tell. I will tell you the lowest I ever saw that monitor at Dell was 268.00 with free shipping. Dell 19" monitors

Thanks a lot!

But the problem with Dell, it says it usually ships in 1-2 weeks. Meaning I may not get it for 2 1/2 - 3 weeks. I cant wait that long. Do you know of any other reputable dealers that I can get it for a good price, and that ships fast like newegg?

Dell sent mine in a few days. You may want to call and ask, I doubt the 1-2 weeks is correct. A few others here just got the 930 and they didnt have to wait. Their monitor warehouse is in Ohio I believe. If you can absolutely not spend more than 250 I would recommend the Dell 19" monitor. For newegg you may want to email or call and pin them down on returns of monitors. I have seen some here say they would take a return. The only place I know of that has easy return policy for monitors is Dell and Gateway. Gateway carries the 930 also but I dont trust those liberal hippies much.

hehe

Well, right now Dell is offering free shipping, and Gateways shipping is a lot. But newegg has it cheapest and has cheap shipping, and I think newegg/dell comes out around the same. But Ill have to see who can get it to me first. I think ill call Dell and see, thanks!

I have the NEC FE991sb....I like it. I'd recommend it, unless you wanna spend more and get the 930 cause I've also heard really good things about it. If you're on a budget though like I was, you'll be happy with the FE991sb. I use a Dell Trinitron at work (17") and if I had to pick between that and the fe991sb, I'd say the NEC...both good though.

If you go for the NEC FE991sb, buy it from Securemart.com cause thats probably the cheapest you'll find it anywhere, unless someone can prove me wrong. Mine came out to like $249 shipped, and it got to me less than 24 hours after I ordered it online.

Securemart is the cheapest but you have to return it to manufacturer if you do not like it or something wrong. The 991 is a nice looking monitor dont get me wrong. I recommended the dell for a 250 max range due to it being .24dp. If you decide to use newegg over dell then I would check out securemart first since both places are not going to take a return. I may be wrong on neweggs nec monitor returns so lik i say u best call and verify their exact policy.

Yeah I get what your saying. I think I would go with Dell over Newegg for this. Newegg comes out a little more in the end, plus I have to pay tax for newegg because they have a nj warehouse 🙁

I really wish there were local dealers that carried these monitors. I know that big stores like CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit City dont carry them.

Believe me the return policy is the most important in monitors. Too many been screwed by them. These days it seems local stores carry mainly lcd's and the crt's the do carry are pretty much main stream models for the average Joe. (cheap). makes it tough on us to gauge a good monitor other than reading reviews. I did do a lot of research on 19" crt's before deciding on the mitsubishi believe me. I narrowed it down to the 930 or the nec 991. I picked the 930 due to my previous specs and the slightly more expensive price tag for those specs.

Thanks, maybe I will spend the little bit more and buy from dell. Just the 1-2 weeks thing that scares me, hopefully its not that long, maybe Ill give them a call.
