Help choosing 24" monitor

I could use some help picking a monitor, there are so many different features that I'm lost. My usage is half gaming, half random desktop stuff. I'd prefer something geared toward gaming (speed over color quality), but still want something good all around. I kind of wish I would've gotten an nvidia card.

I think I prefer 24" at 1080p. Max price ~$400. My eyes are a bit messed up so I kind of don't want pwm monitors, but I don't know how they'll react - they'll probably be okay with it. Should I try to find something with freesync? Is a non-pwm monitor going to make a difference?

Computer specs:
i5-6500
Radeon R9 390

Sounds like non-IPS is fine then, so that leaves you tons of options from 75-144hz.

why?

You've got lots of options. Are you US based? If so just do a power search on newegg like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0102 600284704 600417886&LeftPriceRange=0 400

Thats 0-$400, 24-26", 75-144hz

Pick whichever you like most from those, most monitors use panels from samsung or LG or maybe one or two other places, so they will be very similar in quality, just different bezel, OSD, stand and warranty.

Is freesync (or g-sync for that matter) worth it?

Freesync - 100%. It doesn't add any cost to the monitor so I'd always buy one with it.

GSync - completely up to you if you want to spend the extra $100-300 on it.

Adaptive-Sync techs smooth out any framerate that goes below your refresh rate, so you get no tearing and a better quality image without the input lag / stuttering caused by vsync.

If you run your games in borderless windowed mode you can get a basic look at how it would look, just without the small perf loss of windowed mode.

I had my mind settled on the ASUS MG248Q, but now I"m having second thoughts on the size/type of display.

If you had a $400 budget and the specs I listed, what size/resolution/type monitor would you get? I play an array of games (not competitively, I got CS out of my system 10 years ago).
