Help choose memory for new system

Hello all:

I?d like to build a new PC system in the near future so I?ve been reading up on Anandtech lately ? I?ve been out of the loop for a LONG time. Even after all the reading, there are still several things I am not sure about, and hope you can advise me.

This will be a home PC, primarily used for gaming, working at home on data analysis and modeling (I?m a research scientist by day), web surfing, etc ? an all-in-one PC. I?ve pretty much settled on the following components:

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4 GHz processor (you're gonna tell me to get an X2, aintcha? :p)
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo
eVGA e-GeForce 7800GTX KO 490 MHz PCI-e video card

I?m not quite sure about which memory to choose. I?ve read several write-ups on the Anandtech site on some of the latest memory offerings but I?m still confused. He touts that using 2x512MB PC3200 DIMMS is better than 1x1024MB PC3200 in terms of speed. I?d really like to put a total of 2 GB of memory in this PC, but what should I get/how should I configure it? Will 2x1024MB PC4000 (like OCZ Platinum Extended Bandwidth PC4000 DDR500) work with my mobo? The mobo specs on the MSI website show that DDR400 is max speed. Or should I get 4x512MB? I don?t really know what the timing numbers mean, or the command rate figures. Heck, I can?t even tell if that OCZ memory is single or double sided. I assume the timings and command rate can be adjusted (within the components? capability) via BIOS, right? Can I buy the OCZ 2x1024MB PC4000 RAM and get it to run at DDR400 with the faster settings on the MSI mobo? If yes, what would those timings be?

I am not a PC tinker-er, so I am not planning any overclocking.

TIA,
Kurt
