Happy Holidays, everyone!

I have this Chieftech case and have had it a long time. I replaced the motherboard with an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard, and now the front USB ports won't work. They worked fine with the last motherboard (IWill KK266-R) and are hooked up exactly the same way as they were (well, almost).

Whenever I plug something in the front ports, a ballon pops up say "USB device not recognized". If I disconnect the cable from the front ports and connect the add-on USB bracket that came with the motherboard, it works just fine, so I know it's not the motherboard itself or the USB drivers. It has something to do with the cable from the front USB ports. The add-on bracket has 8 wires, the cable from the front USB ports has 9 wires (an extra ground). I even tried tying all the grounds together and it does the same thing. I tried swapping the +/- data lines, but that didn't work either.

I'm wondering if the problem is caused by the case USB ports being USB 1.1 and the motherboard USB controller being USB 2.0?
Does anyone have this Asus board in this type case with the front USB ports functioning?

Plugging my USB hard drive into the back all the time is a pain.
Any suggestions welcome.

is the usb device itself usb 2.0?

the usb ports in the back work correctly?

If it's like all the other Asus boards I've worked with, the pin rows go Power, D-, D+, Ground, Ground on the top row, and Power, D-, D+, Ground on the bottom. Don't make any assumptions that it's like your Iwill... look in Ye Olde Manual for the pinout.

And yeah, what jntdesign is implying... if you want USB 2.0 speed out of the front ports, you need USB 2.0 wiring if you expect it to work at USB 2.0 speeds. You can go into the mobo's BIOS and restrict the USB controllers to USB 1.1 speeds, and see what happens... but I'd be recommending a shiny new USB 2.0 extension cable so you can plug your HDD into the rear ports without crawling under the desk. Good luck and happy holidays yourself

My external HD is USB2.0. It also works well running on USB 1 ports.

The drive came with a USB2.0 cable and works very well with the rear USB ports.

I have the pin-out correct (and I did use the manual, both boards have the same pin-out).

I still cannot get the front USB ports working.

Thousands of people have this case. Someone must have an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe in this case...

i have that mobo, and i had it in that case
but the guy who sold it to me didn't package it very well and the case got destroyed
I still have the front panel though

I have a different case and MB, but have had a similar problem with a USB hard drive on the front USB ports. Have you tried other USB devices on the front ports?

I can not help you much...

But this is all I could find.

I doubt this would do much good, since you already said you used the manuals for the pin out.

I am having similar problems with my chieftec case with my A7N8X DLX USB1.1 works fine but my USB 2.0 flash drive doesn't check this thread out for others with similar problems. Text They have Antec cases but they are made by cheiftec.

Yes, there are 2 other threads about this. I'm one of the people who can't get my front USB ports working using a USB 2.0 device.

My problem is with an Antec case though, but with an Asus A7N8X Deluxe.
