Below are the questions plauging me at the moment:
-----------------------------------------------------
1.) I just got done talking with APC support. They told me that a plain jane serial cable won't work for connecting the UPS to my computer. The guy did reveal though, that the only difference between a regular cable and the APC propreitary cables is the pinout. Does anyone know what I'd have to do to convert my regular serial cable to a APC UPS cable? I'm looking for someone that can help me, not just refer me to Google, as I've already tried that, and need some active help.
2.) I have a 40x4 character LCD with backlight. I'm using Windows XP Pro. I got it hooked up to the computer, and when I power on the computer, the 1st and 3rd rows show all black boxes (I think this is normal). Problem is, even when running my winamp plugin (and I've tried a few). The LCD just sits there with the 1st and 3rd rows on. I've tried lcdprint, and that didn't work either. Any suggestions? What mode should the parallel port be in? ECP? Bi-directional? Neither seem to work.
3.) I need some sort of software that will automatically sync 2 directories over a network with ZERO user input automatically as soon as a network connection is detected. For example, as soon as I walk in range of my wireless LAN with my notebook, all files in C:\blah\ on my notebook are synced with C:\stuff\blah\ on my desktop, assuming that everything on the desktop is the most current. I want to do this TRANSPARENTLY. Can it be done?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this stuff.
Captain

I downloaded that tool, but it still doesn't work. By normal mode, you mean "output only", or "bidirectional"? I tried Bi-directional, and lcdprint detected the port and LCD which it hadn't before. But it still won't display text. I even switched to 98 First Edition, which still gave the same results. lcdprint detects it, won't display anything on it.

LCD smartie doesn't work either.

I'm fascinated with using character LCDs with my PC like you've mentioned. Where did you get it? Are there some good sites you could recommend to educate someone in starting to tinker with them?

eio.com has some really great prices on them. For advice, I recommend visiting the mp3car.com forums. They have an entire folder on LCDs. If this is your first try, I recommend asking someone at those forums to prewire one to a parallel port for you unless you are the master of soldering. Or, just buy one from matrix-orbital.com

In response to 3:

I think you are asking for it to do too much...I don't know of anything that will do what you're talking about without SOME type of intervention. Windows 2000/XP have network file synchronization built it, but you have to actually log in to the network for it to occur. I think that would do everything else that you want, but it would require you to log out/log in. However, this is free, so it would save you from buying a 3rd party solution.
