Fellow ATers, I need some advice. My wife and I want to get cellphones. I honestly don't want to spenda lot of money, as they would be mainly for emergency and casual use. She has said, however, that she doesn't want to be limited to emergencies only and would like some room to talk.

I was checking some plans, and I don't know if a family plan (shared minutes) would be better that prepaid cards. Also, I don't know what phone woul be the best (nothing fancy, just basic service) and finally which carrier would give the best price for decent service???

This is in Michigan, Metro Detroit Area.

Thanks

SprintPCS has many flexible minute-sharing plans to fit your needs.

You are your neighbors, the Wong's doing? :D

I just added my wife to my Sprint PCS plan here in Macomb, MI. $59.99/month and we share 4000 minutes. Last month Sprint had a sale where if you sign a family plan you get $100 off a phone so we just picked a $100 phone. Not sure if it is still going.

I look into the SprintPCS plan but it seemed like a rip off.

A single cheap account is $35.00, a family account is $70.00 and you get less minutes.

So... where's the deal?

I'm in NYC by the way.

Voicestream Wireless (now T-Mobile has a family plan for $69.99/mo. They've got 2 free phones to choose from, and here are the specs:

  • Choose either a Nokia 3390 or a Motorola T193 (I think that's the model, I'm not sure) - they're both free (no rebates or anything either)
  • You share 800 minutes/mo. with your wife
  • UNLIMITED Voicestream/T-Mobile to Voicestream/T-Mobile calling (not just you and your wife - it's you and your wife to ANY Voicestream/T-Mobile phone
  • UNLIMITED weekend minutes - From 12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday
  • $69.99/mo with $25 activation per phone.

My family is going to get this plan in October when our current plan with Verizon runs out its contract. Excellent deal, IMO.

Here's a link to the T-Mobile explanation of the plan: Text
