Help! CDROM drive reading problem with Win2000

Anybody had CDROM drive problems with Win200 before? I had two CDROM drives, Kenwood Truex 72x, and Aopen 52x. all had the same problem with Win2000 -- when the system boot, I have to put one CD media into the CDROM, after that, Win2000 will read whatever CD media inserted into the CDROM ( but very slow ). Otherwise, if there is no CD media in the CDROM while booting, Win2000 will not read any CD media I inserted into the CDROM. Same problem happen to me on these two drives, but not my Acer CDRW drive. I check device manager, the CDROM device is working properly.

What is the catch here? Please help.

do you have the 4in1 driver installed properly.
if yes, try to disable DMA on the cd to see if this can help.
i have this problem before with Me, not sure with 2000.
