HELP! cd-rw/dvd rom on laptop not working

I just bought a used laptop (HP ze 5620us) and the cdrw/dvd rom drive wont work right. I reinstalled winxp and put in the drivers and the cd drive wont read any cds or dvds. Well actually it reads but whatever is on the cd it reads it as a 1kb music file.I installed nero and it wont burn a cd neither.Device manager says nothing is wrong.Sometimes on reboot it wont pick up the drive at all.Im open to any and all suggestions or comments.This is my first laptop and I really dont know if I am just missing something or the drive might be bad.Everything else seems to work fine. HELP!!

I think the drive is bad...

You might want to run some lens cleaners...
