Help catching a crook!

Greetings gents:

Three! Thats the number of times someone has broken into my car while parked out front. I suspect it's the same person because each time it has been broken into, they break the window, pop the trunk, and empty everything out into the street. I suspect if they are bold enough to do it three times, they might also be bold enough to try to break into my house!

Therefore, I am seeking advice from anyone who knows anything about setting up a video surveillance setup.

I presume I will need a wireless camera, a reciever, and a recorder. Sadly, i'm not really sure where to start or which product is best for my needs. I would like something that offers some sort of night vision capability and very little maintenance.

Also, are there any recorders available that will record on DVDs? I fine tapes a bit too cumbersome. it would be easier to change and catalog.

thanks guys

I don't really know too much, but I'm pretty sure you can record to tapes that roll over every 48 hours or so. That way, when something happens, you just roll it back and check.

I'd ask radio shack... or google. Wish I could be more help.

Might want to try googling for the x-10 setup. They have a wireless (except for power adapter) camera that would probably fit the bill nicely. Most setups have options for recording, than you just burn to cd/dvd with whatever software you already have.

Should've left your car unlocked after then 2nd time. Nothing's gonna help you keep the crook from entering your home but landmines now.

OK if you think that the security of your car / family/ yourself are worth it then you should be ready to shell out some money example : Surveillance kit.
this comes equipped with and Infra Red Sensor and is able to record whenever a single movement is detected where you have it setup, it's very effecient and the sweetness is that you can add as many as you like up to 6 cameras wireless and 4 wired.
You can get the extra cameras here

You can manage cheaper solutions but this is the professional / reliable way of doing it, and requires much less techinical skills to operate than having your own setup.

Agreed.

Thanks a million. I'm checking out this setup now. If it operates well in the dark I might get it

get one w/ a heat sensor and motion tracker then mount a .50cal gun ontop of it. rig the gun to fire off ~50 rounds when it senses movement. itll airrate your lawn for ya and get rid of any pesky cats, dogs, chipmunks, or kids in your yard. make sure you tell your mailman tho or it may create a bad situation.

This is an interesting kit, but the problem I see with it is the lux rating-won't pickup too much in the dark...

"About Surveillance Camera Technical Features
Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three Lux would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the Lux level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions."

Nahhh, we don't need to tell the UPS guy... he'll still throw packages at your door, but after this, he'll have to be faster... heh. Damn slow UPS.

You're going to need some Wi-Fi cameras, a wireless router and some sort of webcam software that lets you record video from the webcams.

the complexity is only limited by your budget, and how agressive you want to get. simple motion detector based lights offer very good first line deterrence, but if you still have the problems, then video cameras will give you good supporting evidence but might not actually stop the break ins.

Here are a couple options, and Geeks is usually running specials on these so.....
option 1
option 2
option 3
option 4

you get the idea. Most of these can be set up for recording also. Good luck
