I installed the Catalyst 3.1 set and now I have now Direct3D and no 2D acceleration. I upgraded from Cat. 2.5 DX81b combination first to DX9 and everything worked fine. Then I uninstalled the old drivers and installed the new 3.1s and after restart 2D is super slow and no DirectX. Upgrading with an original Radeon DDR.

Anyone lese have this problem an maybee now how to fix it?

Uninstalled the 3.1 and tried the Omega 3.0 edition drivers and still the same problem.
I also have two more problems now. Since the ATI drivers are XP logo certified or something, XP installs them as a new default, so when I unninstall the drivers windows wants to reinstall the 3.1s automaticaly. And I have deleted all the ati .inf files I can find and it still goes for the 3.1s by default. Anybody know how to remove the 3.1 information and frivers from the XP backup and force it to use it's original drivers or no drivers by default, and also dissable the driver updating for certified drivers. And I know there is a way to dissable the logo testing driver warning in XP as I found it a lond time ago, anybody knwo were it is so I can dissable it entierly.
And the second and my biggest problem is that the new drivers are installed with a 640x480 resolution by default for some reason as oposed to the usual default of 1024x768, and as a result all my icon arrangements get messed up. Since I have taken many precoutions for such a senario, I can resore the old icon arrangements, but I would like to permently force a 1024x768 or higher resolution for the desktop if possible.

Thank You

Have to search for oem*.inf find any with ati in them. Then find the same numbered ones for oem*.pnf. So if oem43.inf had ati installation things delete it then you would also delete oem43.pnf. You'll need to look through all of them till you find the one with the ati installation stuff may have more than one. Your radeon doesn't use any dx9 features so if nothing else helps then format and reinstall os and use dx8.1.

Thanks Glitchny, I'll try it, but did you reinstall DirectX after the 3.1 drivers and then 3.1 aggain?

I did a system restore to before the 3.1s and othoogh the drivers vere fully restored, my control panel was not and niether was my monitor. It was easy to reinstall, I am just worried about the other things the system restore did not properly restore. My guess is that the 3.1s are still set as defaults for some reason and I do still have the 640x480 bug as once when ajusting the Direct3D settings after the restore, the display went to 640x480 and that only happened earlier with the 3.1s.

Thanks

I have a feeling that smartGART is disabling certain AGP functions. Click start, settings, control panel, administrative tools, services. Look for ATi Smart in the list. Make sure that it is set to automatic instead of manual or disabled. I had similar symptoms because I disabled this program to free up some memory.

Thanks, SmartGart set AGP to off and fast writes to on. Changing to 4X and off and restarting fixed the normal display problems.

Unfortunately I still have the two bigger problems. Even after the restore, the 3.1 drivers staed as default and with the same SmartGart problem so whenever I uninstall the display driver or do something the bad 3.1 is installed. At the same time it causes install problems as when I tried reinstalling the 3.1s aggain, not a single file was coppied, and probably because the already installed 3.1 default drivers interfered. Deleting the files and then installing helped but still had problems. I have found the way to permenantly remove XP's knowledge of newer and even all display drivers, I just can't find it on my system?

And the same resolution issue that sets to 640x480. This is my biggest problem as 640x480 showed up after restore, after install and once again after I set the gart to the proper setting. So this is what I realy need to fix. I know it is possible to limit desktop resolutions and still allow those game resolutins as most drivers I've installed lately do not have resolutions below 800x600 but run gemes perfectly fine at 640x480. So if I sould smoehow put a permenent lock of 1024x768 minimum dessktop resolution in XP that would be great.

Thanks again
