I posted this in technical support, but didn't get a response, so thought I'd try here...

I have an ASUS TV Tuner card, and am trying to capture video using Virtualdub. However, anytime I try to select a resolution higher than 320x240, it gives me "error 418: Unsupported Video Format".

How do I get Virtualdub to capture higher quality with this card? I know people are using it for 720x480 captures, but I can't figure out how to get the program to work with that. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Looks like its plenty capable of full resolution captures. Is it just Vdub? or is it any other program. Vdub uses the older VFW API instead of the newer Direct Show API, perhaps the VFW wrapper needed to support legacy applications only allows single field capture?

Thanks. I'm a little confused by what "the directshow filters" are that he's talking about. Any clues?

Hey, here's a quote from DVDRhelp, concerning this card:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/capturecards.php?CaptureCardRead=Asus TV Tuner Card&Search=Search

"As for capturing, The Connexant CX233880 decoder is not supported by Virtualdub so I had to use the directshow filters. I'm able to capture at 720x480 YUY2, then compress to huffyuv, mjpeg, divx, etc. This seems to work well but I still find that the video is not that clear. "

I forgot to mention that yes, I can capture at higher resolutions using other programs. I tried it in Virtual VCR, and it worked, though the audio & video got way out of sync, but that's a whole other issue I suppose.

Basically, you're going to need to use directshow applications for full resolution captures, or find a VFW driver that will allow full resolution captures.

Here's a link to some useful applications/utilities maybe something will work for you.Link Make sure you have your soundcard and video drivers up to date, defrag your HD ect.

I've had good luck capturing with PowerVCR II. It should have come with your Asus card. It's not quite as flexible as I like (only mpeg1 or 2) and it had to be tweaked to capture more than 600 megs in a file, but the quality is exceptional and always in sync.
