Help! Can't undo mess on desktop caused by synchronization

I would be grateful if someone could help...I tried to cut/past a link from Hotmail. Some program called "synchonization" started. I clicked stop. When I returned to my desktop, a box was created with the MSN hotmail homepage. Previous to this, I had created a shortcut on the desktop for the hotmail login page. This was now gone. I've tried to delete the box including using the desktop clean up tool but can't get rid of it.
