Help! Can't start computer, static on screen

I've got a q6600 and gigabyte ep-35-ds3l motherboard. I've had it running for over a month at 3.2 ghz without problem (prime-95 tested), and suddenly when i restarted it canceled my overclock and went back down to 2.13ghz. I reset the settings and changed everything back and it stayed.

Today it happened again, but when i put it back at 400x8 and restarted, i got a screen full of static, like when your vcr is on and you're set to the wrong channel. I can't even get to the bios! I really don't want this to happen, it was working perfectly. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Have you tried setting the cpu back to stock speed? Clear the cmos first or take out the battery for a couple minutes and put it back in, then clock your cpu back to defaults.

Yes, I was clearing the cmos as I was typing. It worked, but what could have caused such a problem? Both the unexpected downclocks and the static as soon as i hit the power button?

This happened to me once.... though not the static thing, but the downclocks when i hit the power button... Just once though and my system has been fine ever since...

Could a power surge somehow clear the CMOS??

With a post like this it's usually helpful to list the complete specs of your computer.

I've heard of DS3L's not holding an overclock now and then, but never the static issue.
