Okay,

I am using sygate for my internet sharing plus i have home networkcomprising 2 PCs. But for some reason every now and then applications like napster, yahoo! Messenger, MSN! Messenger, and most importantly CS stop logging on to their servers (on my 'server' computer)!!!!! i simply cant connect to the game server, yahoo server etc?????

I use @home cable service.

In another quirk, i am also unable to check my hotmail account! my yahoo account seems to work fine!

Some one help me!!!

I am unfamiliar with Sygate, I've heard of both Sygate and Wingate(are they the same? does Sygate merely make Wingate?), but recently my friend was having trouble getting his computers to run games on the internet with Internet Connection Sharing in Windows 2000. I suggested he get Wingate to manage his proxy, and sure enough after little time he had it going, hosting servers and all the like. Perhaps if you are not using Wingate you should try that. I myself use Windows 98SE, and the Internet Connection Sharing that is built into it. Works fine for my network, I can connect to any server and use applications that transfer files. Hosting a server with Win98SE is a different story, not easily done without 3rd party software.

Well as I typed this response I searched a little. Seems Wingate is different than Sygate, so I suggest you use that. Wingate. My friend set this up in a matter of minutes and it worked flawlessly so far.

I'm assuming you are trying to play CS on the machine that is running Sygate and the computer is connected directly to the internet via a network card. If this is the case, Right click on Network Neighborhood and go to properties. If there is any other protocol (IPX, Netbeui, etc) I would click on them and hit remove until you only see TCP/IP. Click TCP/IP and click properties. Go to gateway and if there is anything listed, click on it and hit remove. That should work. If not, give us more info.

Is Sygate NAT software? Maybe you need to open up some ports. Not sure what ports those applications use though. Try this site. It has some good info on Internet sharing.

Thanx guys i am gonna try some of the things and see how things go! tho i am not sure i can delete 'Netbeui' as it is essential for my home network! (is it not?) I have set up my home network using the networking feature of Win98se. I have 2 NIC on 'MY COMPUTER' (where i cant play CS etc). One NIC connects to cable modem for Internet. the other goes to the 'OTHER COMPUTER'. I use sygate for Internet Sharing and Win98se for Networking and Resource Sharing (like accessing other computers drives etc).

Anymore ideas?

TCP/IP should be all you need. Netbeui is better for peer to peer networking in some cases but shouldn't be necessary. Make sure the network card that is connected to your cable modem is the default card. (There should be a check box under the properties of the TCP/IP protocol connected to that network card.) Hope that helps.

Personally, I think there are some network bugs in CS since I run into the same problem with being unable to connect to any servers. It usually occurs after playing CS then exiting and restarting it without rebooting in the meantime. It won't connect to anything. If I close CS/HL then reboot, I'll receive a Windows Protection Error, and the computer hangs. Hard reset restarts the system, and CS works again. Very odd.

I am planning on a reformat shortly so I can install Linux and change the hard drive configuration, and I'll see if the problem remains after that.
