Most likly it dumped a script exploit into his startup folder or his temporary internet files. Run a virus scan of the system, it should catch it.

first do a "Find Files/Search" containing text "website in question" does not have to be the whole url just a name from it...carefully look at the results make note of the results that correspond with the date in question that he went fumbling by that site..and selectively delete be very careful of what you are deleting then empty the recycle bin and temp internet history/cookies/folders..test home page

You tried getting rid of cookies, and temp internet files?

In Win2k the homepage is located here in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"Start Page"="???.????.com"

Load up msconfig from the Run menu, and take a look at what's booting. Anything suspicious try ticking them off ONE AT A TIME and rebooting and see if IE's start page is hijacked again. When you isolated the offending prog, seek and destroy....

I know, depending on your OS, there are several directories in the Registry ( /Run, /RunServices, etc.) that will operate startup progs. Search for those keys in regedit. You may also want to check the Startup folder in the Start Menu and the "run=" line at the top of SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI.

Another solution is to switch to Mozilla or Opera, but we're getting ahead of ourselves here...:]
