Okay.. just tried this for the first time.. I got out the flat thing on my swiss army knife.. I push down on the latch and out.. but it won't go out (away from the hsf).. push down more, push out.. still won't go outward.. what's going on with this thing? how hard do I have to push? I mean.. I'm pushing pretty hard.. it won't come out.. and my ram is pretty close.. I guess I could take it out.. probably a wise idea.. I can't go through the whole deal of taking everything out of my case to get my mobo out.. that is just insane... I'm bound to break something that way.. how the hell do I get this thing off???

thanks.

it's that standard one.. only it has a cooler master fan on it.. but it looks like the same one that is in AMD's "socket A AMD processor installation guide".. just the stock one I guess.. OEM.. it's still in my case.. I just tried again.. I mustered up some more balls to do it.. and I tried even harder and I thought I was gonna break something for sure.. it wouldn't come off..
I push down on the retainer clip.. and away from the hsf right??? I used a thing on my knife that resembles a flat head screwdriver.. and I used a small pair of needlenose.. couldn't do it..
Damn.. this sh!t is really scary.. especially to a broke guy like me.. if I break something.. no more anandtech.. uh oh..

yeah I think you are doing this right... the HSF is pretty tight... when I took mine out the first time I pushed pretty hard too, and had the exact same thoughts going thru my mind as you do now :)

that thing on your Swiss knife probably wont do it, too soft... I used something like a wire clipper...

and yeah, take the RAM out... that will give you more room to work with... and DONT SCRATCH ANYTHING...

Some clips have a small slot under the flat top part where your finger or thumb goes, I have before inserted a small flat screw driver into that slot and used the screw driver itself to push down and out to release the clip, other than that use a small needle nose plyer and grab at the bottom of the clip about 300 to 400 hundred thousands up from the bottom while pushing the top down with your other thumb, pull the clip outward .....never pull down with the plyers only outward....because if you pull down and slip off the clip...you know what happens then:(
