I just bought a cubx-e mobo and P3 850 fc-pga. I can't get it to boot to the bios correctly! could I under clock it to 800? looking at asus' tech forum I saw the question raised about if the bios can support it. the only thing I have in my case is cubx-e mobo/ 256 MB pc133 ECC ram (mushkin) and matrox g400 vid card.
can I harm anything by underclocking it?
It either locks up during ram check, or it makes it to the bios and locks up there.

I am so frustrated right now!!!

thanks evryone!:disgust::confused:

First, did you make sure the chip and heatsink are properly seated?

Second, did you try a different stick of RAM?

Also, if you are configuring using the jumpers are you sure they are set correctly??

I haven't had a chance to try another stick of ram yet ("one of those days" at work) that was my first thought. it's not no name ram though it's mushkin, but i think it might have to be the fact that I have a P3 850. I've seem some questions raised about the 8.5 * 100 clock multiplier on Asus boards. I want to try under-clocking it using the jumpers. but am not sure of the effects of this. also I believe the 850 uses a lower cpu voltage than lower speeds. (not 100% sure)

I was hoping someone knew about any issues with asus mobo's and the p3 850.

hopefully tomorrow I can play around with it, nad replace the ram.:frown:

thanks,
Seth

CPU speed = FSB x CPU multiplier
Their is no way to change the CPU multiplier on a Intel chip so don't worry about this. Just set the FSB to 100mhz like Intel intended and forget about overclocking/underclocking for now.

Try this:

Make sure your cpu and heatsink are properly installed including connecting the cpu fan to the fan header on the motherboard.

Set all the motherboard jumpers to the auto position so the softmenu in the bios has control of the board.

Make sure that the ram is seated in its slot. You might try to install the ram into a different DIMM slot if you are not sure if it is seating properly.

Connect your hard drive to one of the regular IDE ports, not to the ATA66 controller. After you have the system up and running you can install the ATA66 driver and switch the cable over to the faster controller port.

Try to boot and enter the bios.

Go to the "Advanced" tab and make sure to set the "CPU Speed" to 850mhz.

Go to "Chip Configuration" and make sure you set the SDRAM Config to "By SPD".

If you changed anything else the first time you were in the bios, double check these settings. You should not have to change much at this point. If you can not remember, go to the "save" tab and reset the default settings.

If this stuff does not work, check all your motherboard connections again and check back into the forum for additional help.

Good luck.

Thanks Nessism, I got it to boot up it will go through the ram check, hard drive detection then it asks for a boot floppy (no OS installed yet) I guess it wanted the HD connected.:)
But I still have a problem in the bios. when I press the delete key to get into the bios it goes into it then the keyborad locks up. Nothing works, I have to do a hard reset.
any Ideas?

FIXED!!!
of course something simple. The mobo standoffs in my supermicro case are metal. apparently the mobo was grounding out to the case!
I found this out by calling ASUS tech support! I never knew they had a US number!
here it is if you need it! (boy they'll hate me!)
1-510-739-3777 then option 2 then option 3!

thanks to everyone for their help!
