I just installed windows XP on my system and the installation went without a hitch. When it was booting into windows for the first time, it would get to the windows XP splash screen with the progress bar on the bottom moving, and then once that's done, the screen goes blank. Supposedly after a brief pause, I should be greeted by the desktop. However in this case the screen stays blank (black). The monitor led is green meaning that it's not on standby, and I dont hear the computer loading anything from the hard drive anymore. I've rebooted several times with the same result. Same result when I choose "last known good setting".

I am able to boot into safe mode, but that's about it. I've formated and reinstalled windows once since i first encountered this problem, and the same problem persists. I'm not overclocking anything.

Any ideas??

Stuff in the comp:
- Iwill KK266 (using the onboard cmedia sound)
- Tbird 1200
- 2 sticks of 256mb ram
- Geforce2 gts pro
- netgear NIC
- LSI Logic U2W scsi
- Quantum Atlas 10k III (where i'm installing windows)
- scsi dvd rom
- scsi cd rom
- scsi zip drive

thanks!

Successful safe mode suggests it is a specific driver that is causing the problem. Can you try the normal boot mode, but stepping the drivers one at a time? That can sometimes isolate the guilty party. My guess is a video driver.

Another tack is to boot in safe more, and then remove all peripheral devices, and then physically disconnect them and see if you can get a boot with just computer and monitor.

Here is the startup troubleshooter for XP.

You can disable selected components for startup so you can figure out what is hangin you up.
