Help! Can I restore my windows partition? Lilo problems

Hi guys.

I was installing Linux onto my Windows 2000 system for fun tonight.

Lilo overwrote /dev/hda1 's boot sector, both killing the windows2000 loader, and making ALL the contents of my c: drive disappear.

The partition is still there, linux can mount it but it's completely empty.

Please, does anyone know how to solve this? I'm desparate, I have so much stuff there and I don't know how much of it is backed up.

E-mail me at gludlow@purdue.edu if you can help.

Thank you!

Ouch. I too was installing Linux tonight, but thankfully I was using Mandrake and it warned me before it was about to do this. I went back and manually formatted all the new partitions and the installer never attempted to reformat the Win2K partition again.

I think once the partition was reformatted all the data went bye-bye. Sorry.

Unless he told it to format that drive (he did not specify that he did so) the installer would not have formatted it. The boot sector is different than the partition.

I bet you back up everything from now on 🙂

So what happens when you select windows from LILO? Anything? Was there any mention of this in any of the documentation you read about installing win2k and linux on the same machine?
