Help Calibrating my CRT

I got a second-hand 22" HP p1230 Diamondtron CRT. It was manufactured March, 2005.

It still has 2 years of HP afterservice on it even.

Here is the thing, when I first got my new Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers I put the subwoofer up right beside the CRT (right side) for maybe 20 minutes until I noticed the distortion it caused. Then I put it under the desk, right side - about 2 feet away total I guess. It didn't SEEM to cause any distortion anymore.

But now, on a pure white screen, the right 1 inch of the screen seem to bleed a little red and be a bit faded when showing whites and black on whites. Not that much fade, mostly a bit blotchy with a slight, very slight, pinkish haze. I do not know if this has always been there. Maybe my subwoofer did it in the 20 min it was beside the CRT or maybe it has been doing it slowly when it was under the desk (only 2 feet away)? I have nowset it up so it is slighlt over the recommended 3 feet away.

I am new to computers and I have DLed the opwners manual. But I do not understand half the things on the On Screen Display. But I have been fiddling to get my whites pure down the right side of the screen.

I set the color temp to standard 6500k RGB. I hit the "reset to factory defaults button". I have degaussed a few times. I tried messing with upper left and lower left corner color purity buttons (no idea what they area). But still the problem persists. I could play with the clamp position pulse button - if I knew what it is.

Hell, I can't even get my geometry right there are so many buttons and it is so frustrating. But I can live with that cause I know it is just a matter or learning and patience. But with the pinkish discoloration issue I am not sure if I just don't know how to adjust yet or if something is wrong and I need to call in HP after-service (no idea how that works - have to get original owner to call it in I bet, luckily he has been cool and is helpful).

Any ideas what is up here or what a newbs next step should be?

I also have moved my CRT quite a few times recently as I adjusted my workspace since everything is new and I'm still settling in.

Some googling suggests that this slight pinkish/purplish haze could well be a result of magnetization by a combination of the original subwoofer placemenyt, it subsequently still being within 3 feet for 3 weeks, and due to moving the CRT.

According to these sights it might well take a dozen or more full degausses (either by manually degaussing, turning CRT off for 20 minutes, and redoing it) or just over time as the auto-degausser fires up everytime I turn the CRT on for a new day.

Is there any possibility this is true and I just need to wait it out now that I have stopped moving it and have moved muy subwoofer 40 inches away?

We have a Viewsonic 19" CRT at work that had a similar issue, except that the speaker was next to it for 6 months. The discoloration got better , but never went away, even after several years...

Well deguass first of all if you haven't yet. I know that the NEC/Mitsu Diamondtrons have a control called Gobalsync where you can adjust the purity of each corner. I dunno how much this will help for a whole half of the screen. Maybe you can get a powerful external deguassing tool but I don't know much about them. Show me where tha manual is and i'll take a look in it. Keep sub and speakers at least 2 feet away from monitor or more.

It is only like an irregular strip about 3/4 of an inch down the right side where the subwoofer was.

It has gotten better and really only seems to show on ALL white or light grey windows screens. I can't detect it in games or movies or with other colors.

The subwoofer was only RIGHT beside it for 30 min or so - can it really do that much damage OMG. What do I do now? I want my CRT as perfect as I can get it?

What do the color purity buttons do in the corners?

BTW at this point I have degaussed like 5 times over a week and the monitor has been on and off (auto-degauss ) many times over the month since the woofer was gone (albeit then it was only 2 feet away fro that month).

I so hope I am not screwed. Is subwoofer near CRT some kind of very basic no no that everyone knows not tod do cause even a small exposure can destroy your crt for ever (or impact it forever)?

-I wanna cry-

I don't think 30 mins would permanatly hurt it. Subwoofers have very large magnets that can really affect a CRT though. Why don't you put your sub on the floor? It'd probably be more powerful down there anyway. Show me where the manual for the monitor is. Don't cry.

Is it a vertical stripe on the right side of the screen? Im not sure what you're trying to say.

Subwoofer has been on the floor for a month now - was just beside it for 20 minutes.

Even with the desk between them, do I still need to slide the woofer to the extreme right side of the desk and move the computer to the left (desk is 6 feet by 3 feet - LARGE)? IOW do I really need to maiantain 3 feet of space between them or more even if the desk is in the middle?

It isn't a stripe. It is a very slight pinkish/purplish discoloration down the side where the subwoofer was about 3/4 of an inch to 1/2 inch - the borders are irregular and so width of the discolored area varies. It is only visible on all-white or very light grey/blue windows. You can't really see it in movies or games.

From my research it is textbook magnetization as far as I can tell. But the degausser seems to have done all it can do. It is better than it was buit has stopped improving despite multiple auto-matic degausses (from when I turn on my monitor every morning).

So, sounds like I need to take it to a shop - or get a tech here since it is so heavy (80 pounds).

It is a HP p1230 and you can DL the manual somewhere I think. I got one with the monitor soft-copy on CD from the guy who sold it to me.

Have you tried the landing adjustments?
The landing adjustments controls the warmth/coolness of each of the corners.
It's probably been there but you just never noticed it. There's no way that weak subwoofer would've caused that.

Yeah that what I was thinking. My NEC monitor calls it Globalsync.
