Hey guys I'd like some help and some infomation.

I have order the NetGear 802.11b CBL/DSL Router MR814. I have two computers that I want to connect via the RJ45 ports so I can utlise 100mbps transfers also. Don't worr about the wireless part as I don't need to use it yet.

From what I've read and know I hook it up like this right?

1) Each pc to cable Router (the NetGear MR814);
2) Router uplink part to Cable Modem;
3) Cable modem to outside line;

Now here is what I don't get. I know how to set up a network at home. TCP/IP etc. I se the IP's, DNS and other details manually.

My Cable Modem was assigned a *Mac* address. What does this mean?

Then there is the part of DHCP. I had to get rid of my IP's and network settings to get the Cable modem to work.

What do I have to *SETUP* to get it all to work?

A step by step guide of what I have to do would be nice. I'm thinking of just sticking it all together and enabling DHCP on my computers, plug from each computer to router, from router to cable modem and it should work right? Or anything else do I have to do?

I don't want anyone to hack me so what do I have to do to make it more secure also?

Thanks Koing

Here's the setup I have with my MR814:

Set all your computers so that they obtain IP/DNS automatically
Plug the cable modem into the uplink on the router

That's all you should have to do :). The router will automatically assign your computers IPs and configure them so they can connect to the cable modem.

The MAC address that you spoke of is a unique identifier that is given to all network interface cards (internal, wireless, cable/dsl modems). You don't need to do anything with this number.

As for securing your router, just turn on wireless access control under the WIRELESS SETTINGS section of the admin. Since you're not actually sending anything wirelessly, you don't need to setup WEP or anything like that, you just want to make sure that people with wireless NICs can't connect to your network.
