Help: buying notebook w/ 14.1" LCD. Would you go SXGA or UXGA?

Hi all,

I'm in a dillema here and need your help. I'm about to buy a new lappy for me and in the video options I can choose between XGA, SXGA and UXGA. The UXGA LCD is only $20 more expensive then the SXGA. Btw, XGA is 1024 x 768 (discarded), SXGA is 1400 x 1050 and UXGA is 1600 x 1200.

Would UXGA be too small for a 14.1" LCD? I can always go w/ UXGA and change the resolution to the SXGA like 1400 x 1050 if I think UXGA is too small. However I heard that LCDs are built with that native resolution locked on. So if I go with 1400 x 1050 on a UXGA it would not look as good as having the same resolution in a SXGA screen.

Can anyone confirm this information?

I appreciate your help,

Thanks,
Rayon.

Yes, turning the UXGA down to 1400x1050 would look horrible.

Personally I think 1600x1200 makes the text too small for me. I'd go for SXGA

I have a 15" UXGA screen on my Dell. I'm going fvcking blind reading the thing. Get SXGA and if you can get 15"! Heck ask if they still have XGA available. I never had any complaints about 1024x768 res.

Yeah, I think that UXGA might be a bit much for a 14.1" screen. Sometimes I have problems reading stuff at 1200x1600 on my 21" Trinitron and I turn it to a lower resolution (only when I'm tired :p) so that same resolution on a screen with 1/2 of the area would probably be incredibly small (although you'd be sitting closer to the screen on a laptop). SXGA ought to be perfect.

Why not just use the UXGA and then up the size of your icons and text? Seems a waste to me to go for an obviously less capable level.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I really appreciate it. I'll probably be buying this lappy real soon and would like to have the information ASAP.

So, I think I'll be going with the SXGA then. I'll be doing something today I should have already done before asking this question: I'll stop by some computer store and will look at those resolutions myself. Then I'll be able to say whether UXGA is too much for me and will see how big icons/text looks like in that resolution on a 14.1" screen.

Thanks again,
Rayon.
