help bulk renaming files

I use to do this a long time ago, I forgot how and apparently I'm not Googling the right thing to get help. I have like 2,000 files I want to rename, all in different folders. I search and select them all and type a new name. They're coming up "file (1)" for all of them. Now I remember in XP I use to do something to get it to rename multiple files to the same name without the (1). But I remember nothing lol. I know there are probably a bunch of softwares I could download to accomplish this. But, I'd really like to be told I'm not crazy and remember wrong and this is possible. I'm running Windows 10 if that helps.

^pretty neat, will have to remember that.

I think MultiCommander is another file explorer that can do that with a build in batch renaming utility.
