No video editing apps are GPU accelerated so performance won't vary from one video card to the next. Okay, Liquid has a very few GPU accelerated FX.

2GB memory

As many Core 2 Duo processor cycles you can afford.

And as with any system a high quality power supply.

there are some cards that do handle the realtime previewing and actually allow it to be done in realtiem withtout the need for a full render. canopus, pinnacle and matrox come to mind but i am not sure which ones

We might be talking about different things here. There ARE cards that accelerate specific NLE's. But these aren't off the shelf video cards. They have hardware in them specific to accelerating a specific NLE.

I'm quite sure that only Pinnacle LE has a very few effects, mainly 3D transitions if I remember correctly, that are accelerated by the graphics adapter GPU.

There is a lot of rumor about this eventually being a feature in most NLE's but right now there is no reason to buy a powerful video card for video editing. I wrote a book on this two years ago and nothing has really changed since then.

Avid Liquid 7 has added more and we now have RT playback for time-warp as well. Playback of non-rendered effects is done with the GPU where possible and per effect. It really makes a difference in HDV (including needing PCI-e).

Interesting. Are any of the following GPU accelerated?

Crossfade/Dissolve transition
Color correction (brightness/contrast/levels/curves/saturation/RGB adjust, etc...)
Sharpen/Unsharp Mask

The default crossfade is GPU. Brightness and Contrast can be GPU too.

Here is a list - Clip Effects (GPU):

2D, 3D, Page Peel, Page Curl, Water Drop, Water Wave, Full Crop, Lens Flare, Magnify, MultiShape Crop, MultiShape PiP, MultiShape Spotlight, Replicate, Accordian, Bevel Crystal, Falling Crystals, Cylinter, Curtain, Explosion, Reflection, Shards, Sphere Section, Stained Glass, Swirl, Tiles, Brightness and Contrast, PIP.

For transitions, add to the list: Band Wipe, Barn Doors, Clock Wipe, Inset, Iris Cross, Iris Diamond, Iris Round, Iris Square, Push, Radial Wipe, Slide, Wedge Wipe, Wipe.

Color Correction is still CPU. Magic Bullet is CPU as is the Commotion filters they have added.

Impressive list of GPU acceleration.

I would love to see benches of the same script run on a low power GPU vs something like an 8800.
