Help Building First PC

Need a little help. Got an old HP, changed out defective parts but never built one from scratch. I told my self when I buy my next one I am going to build it. Im not a huge gamer but I would like to be able play all the new games out well. I already purchased case from newegg, 400w power supply, and originaly was going to go with p4 2.8c, gigabyte 1000pro board, nvidia 5200 card, 40 gig western digital, and cheap 2700 2x256 mb ram for dual channel. Now reading reviews on newegg, I am thinking about 2500+ barton. My main goals with machine are for gaming and dvd burning. Dont know much differences about the 2 chips, and would just like some overall help. Would like to stay under $500 to $600 dollars. One question I have is why is it a +2500 when only clocked at 1.8 ghz. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums 🙂

If you want a gaming rig you're not going to want an nVidia 5200.

AMD CPUs perform more work per cycle then Intel's do as well as other architectural differences, which allow them to use PR ratings of 2500+ for a 1.8GHz CPU. Benchmark wise the Intel is a bit faster since they put out the C version of their 2.4s after AMD had the 2500+ out. I'm sure someone could explain this a bit better then me...

I'll throw some parts at you for a nice gamer rig:

Abit NF7-S 2.0 $99
AMD 2500+ Retail $80
ATi/Gigabyte 9600XT $159
Mushkin DDR400 256MB Green $41ea
WD 80GB 8MB cache HD $68

$488 total - shipping extra - all parts from newegg.com except for the video card which is from mwave.com

With the Abit board you don't really need a soundcard since the Soundstorm onboard video is on par with Creative Audigy cards. A lot of guys around here also like the Shuttle AN35-N Ultra boards $66. I'm not up on my Intel parts so I can't really recommend a good motherboard.

Here's a pretty good PC builders guide.

because, even though it's clocked at 1.8Ghz it'll preform on par with a 2500 P4

in some benchmarks it'll win, in some the p4 will win (check the benchmarks if you care)
