Building a home all-purpose Network Server!?

Here is what I plan to use it for. What I want is to have a server that can act as a NAS, but still offers FTP and HTTP (preferably secure) access for my person website. I do not expect the FTP of HTTP to be utilized that heavily, mainly for internal testing of websites and the occasional file transfer. I also want to store all my Videos and MP3 to be accessible form any system in my house. And I want the data to be protected reasonably well from disk failure and data corruption for this reason I am going for an S-ATA RAID 5 system. I also want the system to draw as low of power as possible (I am energy conscious I guess) and I want the system to be able to run as quietly as possible and if I can have a fully passive system I think it would be fantastic. I want to be able to shove this system into a closet and remote access it from any other PC. I also want it to take up as little of space as possible.

Requirements
  • Low Power Consumption
    RAID-5 (Data Portection)
    File Sharing (NAS)
    ftp server (Secure Login)
http server (Support for MySQL and PHP)
    Noiseless (Fan less Preferably)
    Small form factor (Micro Tower)
200GB SATA Harddrive with 8MB cache, 3x173 WD2000JD
Promise Tech. FastTrak S150 SX4 1x200
Lian Li PC-402A 1x108
Power Supply 1x?
VIA EPIA V8000 - 800Mhz 1x97
512MB SDRAM, PC133 1x76 CT64M64S4D7E
256MB SDRAM, PC133 1x66 CT32M64S4D7E

Note: #x# is the Quantity and Price Per Device

First and what I am mostly concerned about is the case. I go to the site and it says 2 External 5.25 bays, 1 External 3.5 bays, 2 Internal 3.5 bays, but looking at other people?s reviews some time they say it only has less internal bay. Anyone have this case that can clarify it for me. In anyone knows of a better/cheaper but just as small case please let me know. Next I guess I need a Good PSU for the Case

The Second question is the VIA 800MHz chip powerful enough to run the S-ATA Raid card?

Can anyone look over the system and tell me if it will work. I don?t want to shell out $1000 and get hosed because of a part. I have never built anything like this before.

I want to know if everything will work.

Let me help you out here.

If you want to use a passive only system then a VIA EPIA800 -1GHZ is an excellent choice. However those boards are Mini-ITX and will not work in a MATX case.

That being said the ITX cases that I know of use an external power supply of around 55 watts. Which in itself is enough power to do what you want. However on the drive sideof things they only come with 1 - 5.25" slim drive external and 1 -3.5" Internal bays. These cases are small. Generally you would need to run low profile cards and slim drives.

I would suggest changing your processor/board idea to a Duron and place it in a MATX case. I can do these and you would hardly be able to tell it was running.

Not to say the VIA board is a bad idea I just think that if you are going to do this, might as well get all that you can in there and that everything will work correctly.

PM me if you need more help.

On the other hand Biostar has released a Mini-ITX case board deal that has SATA built into it. It is in a P4 configuration with the SIS 651 northbridge, this maybe your best option coupled with a Celeron this could be an excellent alternative.
