help building a computer

hey everyone, my hd decided to die on me today, so i decided it was time to build a new computer, i'm currently using an athlon t-bird 1.33

it's been quite a few years since i did anything with hardware, with all the new things out, athlon xp, 64 bit and what not, i'm confused on what i should be getting

For the chip, motherboard, and ram i would like to spend about $250-300
I don't want anything fancy, just something to play HL2 or doom 3 on medium or even low settings.
i prefer to shop at newegg, i was browsing around, and the types of ram/motherboards/cpus have increased so much, any help would be appreciated, thanks in advanced

Try This
EPOX "EP-8KDA3I" NVIDIA nForce3 250 $64.50
AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - Retail $150.00 754 socket
Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 $67.53
Total $282.03 That should be a decent cheap upgrade
Add this video card for a cheap upgrade that should play games on medium Settings
SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP $142.00

Probably could find a better card for just a bit more money?
