abit bd7II is my mobo

i plug in the hd and floppy and one ram, and the cpu, a green light glows on the mobo, but when i press the button to turn it on, a red light flashes on the mobo (while the green stays on the whole time) and the fans whirrs for like 2 seconds, and then everything dies :(
any ideas on whats wrong?

after that, i also unplugged the floppy and the hd, and took off the ram and the video card, so all that was left on the mobo was just the cpu and the same thing happened then also

I am not familier with that motherboard but I'm guessing either that fan doesn't have rpm monitoring or else the motherboard is shorting out somewhere in the case. I would try to boot the computer with the motherboard outside of the case. If the fan does not have rpm monitoring, some motherboards refuse to boot because they can't detect a fan cooling the processor and then it prevents the processor from burning up. You have to hit like F8 or something (check out your motherboard manual) to boot your computer if it has the no fan protection option for the motherboard.

btw, the mods don't like someone having 2 user names, the board gets cluttered enough as it is

i did try taking the motherboard out of the case and try to boot up just with the cpu on it, but that had the same effect. I'm not able to access any setup or anything because the computer doesn't boot up into anything. You press the power, and it comes on only for one second, and nothing shows up on the monitor. Could it be that the power supply isn't atx 2.03 compliant eventhough it says it's good for p4??

i don't have two names...my friend posted the original topic and then i just added to it to clarify

I would try another power supply but it's probably the motherboard/processor giving you the problems.
