Help Buid a Dream Machine AMD & Intel

OK this is what i would build for my dream Rig:

Intel:
CoolerMaster ATC-200
Pentium 4 (Socket478 Northwood) 2.2 Ghz OCed to 2.5
Asus P4S333
3 GB DDR333
2 x 160 GB Maxtor Hard drives ( for games, OSes and apps)
Sound Blaster Audigy Platinium
VisionTek X-tasy Geforce 3 TI500
32x10x40 TDK CD Writer
16X Pioneer DVD Drive
Windows XP Professional & Windows 2000 in dual boot

AMD:

Athlon XP 1900+ 1.6hz OCed to 1.9 ghz
Iwill XP333-R
3 GB of PC2700 DDR RAM
same for the rest 🙂

Give YOUR ideal machine ...dualies , P4's Athlons ...Xeons , P3's 🙂 wanna see what yall can come up with

I cant decide between lower noise (The intel route as less cooling is required) or slightly better performance (AMD route)...

But I would go with AMD as it doesnt make economic sence for me to buy an Intel system when I could get the same performance for less. Even if it is a dream system, why spend more cash when theres always somewhere else to spend the money (Car, hifi, clothes etc). 🙂

Probably something like:

XP 1800+
512 mb
25? Gb (have network storage, so a small fast drive is what I want)
Dual Sony Multiscan E400 Monitors (19" Flat CRT)
Some sort of ATI card (for the only reason that 3D performance is not at the top of the list and industry competition keeps prices down overall)

Edit: Having said that I am quite happy with my existing Intel system. Good chips, shame about the price. I like a quiet PC though. 😀

Pabster... I'll need your advice when I upgrade then please 😀

I will be upgrading in the next month, and of course with AMD having the best value for money I will be using one of their chips (probably a 1600 or 1700+).

Anyway what sort of cooling do you use? I'd prefer not to spend a lot of money on cooling, as I dont want to offset the price advantage the AMD will have given me... 🙂

Thanks.

I'm using the 1900+ XP because of its performance advantage, irrespective of the price. Even the ridiculously expensive 2.2GHz Northwood doesn't outperform the 1900+ XP in many areas.

For cooling, I'm utilizing a Swiftech MC462-A with a Papst 8412NGL (19.5cfm, 12dB) 80mm fan. It's absolutely silent and keeps the temperatures quite reasonable -- about 45C full load, and that's on a mild day.

I'd definitely go AMD.

However, why are you opting for the Iwill XP333-R? I'd much rather get the new Soyo or Abit boards and then a separate ATA133 controller for your drives.

Also, what do you need 3GB of RAM for? Can't really think of a use for that unless you're running a very busy server. Another thing about the memory...Are these 1GB sticks of PC2700 DDR? Where did you find these and how much do they cost?

Ah, well for me the performance is a nice sideline to the price 😀

I'm not completely up to speed on current cooling systems, are you naming a seperate Heat Sink and then Fan there? Wow, 45 C isnt bad at all for a silent (or even near) rig! 😀

Thanks a lot .

This is what my system will look like in a week or so (it's currently just awaiting the mobo and CPUs):

- Lian-Li PC70
- 431W Enermax PSU (silent one)
- Tyan Tiger MP
- Dual Athlon MP 1800+ CPUs
- Dual Thermaltake SK-6 heatsinks
- 4 x 256MB PC2100 Registered ECC DDR SDRAM by Crucial
- 4 x 40GB IBM 60GXP HDDs in RAID 0 (7200RPM/ATA100) + 4 x 100GB WD1000BB-SE HDDs in RAID 0 (7200RPM/ATA100/8MB cache)
- Promise FastTrak TX4 (four channel PCI IDE RAID controller)
- ATI Radeon 8500, retail
- Audigy Platinum eX (internally mounted LD)
- TDK VeloCD 16/10/40
- Pioneer 16x tray-load DVD drive
- 250MB ATAPI Zip Drive
- Netgear NIC
- Sony GDM-FW900

What do you guys think?

I had a Ti 500 and it didn't do well on the 1920x1200 I run my monitor at...The Radeon 8500 does a much better job.

As for the X15's, sure, but I've never really done any SCSI and I don't want to start now.

And why a 3Com NIC? I don't see any point in that...The Netgear NIC works just as well...

Why limit yourself to 2.5 GHz. Get the Asus P4B266 or GigaByte GA-81RX. You can easily OC to 2.8 GHz (133x22). Both CPU and memory running at 133 FSB with all three memory slots filled. It is not sure if you can run the SIS 645 at 115 FSB if all three memory slots are filled.

See this review from Overclocker.com in Taiwan reporting that 2.2 GHz Northwood easily overclocked to 2.8 GHz, but cannot crack 3 G yet. If you cannot read Chinese, the charts are quite self explanatory.

You can get the fastest PC that money can buy today.

What about monitor? if you REALLY HAD the money i'd recommend the IBM T221 LCD. 😛
IF you want to go Intel, then i'd wait for the 533mhz versions to come out. or AMD, the Hammer mabey..

Whenever somebody posts something like this, Somebody like me goes why not Dual Athlons/Dual Xeons and SCSI RAID and why dont you get 2 Matrox G200 PCI cards and 9 LCD's seeing as it is going to be a dream machine.

How about 256 Athlon MP's in a cluster? Why not a DVD writer? Why not get some serious professional sound card action and most of all why not linux? 🙂

3Com's have been by far the best NIC's I've used.

They're supported by everything, good performers, and good support.
Thats mostly from a corporate point of view.
