help! bro's live rock aquarium tank is getting dirty

my bro set up a salt water live rock aquarium tank a couple weeks ago. a few days ago he left to go to europe for 3 weeks (which includes a 2 week cruise) and i have no way of contacting him...

just after a few days algae grew rapidly all over the tank. what am i suppose to do?! theres no filter, just one of those jet stream things that i guess puts water circulation in the tank. he has this fluorescent light thing he has on timer thats stays on around 8am-8pm. then the rest of the night theres a night light.

so what do i have to do? or can i just leave it? its looking really bad and getting worse everyday. or if someone can show me another website/forum that can help me.

if it was setup a couple weeks ago, this is normal, part of the "curing" process so to speak

don't worry about it.
it doesn't have any fish, right? just the live rock?

Did he ask you to watch it and give you instructions? If not, I wouldn't mess with it.

That might be what is supposed to happen.

If there are no fish, then there is really nothing to worry about, if it is just a bunch of brown algae growing on the sides of the tank, this isn't a problem, you can scrub it with a tank scrubber (they are like $5 at a fish shop) if it bothers you.

my bro just told me to add distilled water when it gets below a certain point. there is only live rock in their. i will take a pic in a few mins.

it jus looks really nasty. theres also a a thin film at the top. and starting to stink

heres some pics... but everyone here says to just leave it, so im doing that... if my bro wanted me to take care of it furthur, he would have left notes behind for me... thank you all for the advice

Generally people with salt water aquariums have somewhat more expensive fish than in freshwater aquariums, I'm surprised he didn't leave you with more information...

What is live rock?

I had a pet rock once, but I think Fluffy was dead when I got her.

live rock is real coral from a coral reef/the sea
so it has all the real/natural bacteria and sea critters that are in a coral reef

it is normally used to "seed" a reef tank. you put the live rock in, wait a couple months, then you can add things like shrimp or slugs or snails , anemonies, urchins, etc, etc

*looked at pics*

dude, that aint nothin , forget about it. just keep the water level up like he told you

FoBots correct. Try and keep sunlight away from the tank. Did he leave the blinds open when he left? With that much algae growing it has to be exposed to sunlight.

If the tank is exposed to sunlight for the entire duration of his trip, its going to look pretty bad when he gets back.
